Acts as an advocate for the Sheridan Memorial Hospital Compliance Program by safeguarding and protecting the patient’s rights to privacy. Ensures only authorized individuals have access to the patient’s medical information and that all release of information is in compliance with the request, authorization, company policy and HIPAA statutes. Performs Processing duties as backup to other staff. Excellent customer service is priority.ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILTIES

  • Greets walk-in customers with a smile, introduces self and adheres to all “Kindness First Standards”. Explains process and time expectations in fulfilling information request.
  • Responsible for coordinating the release of medical information to all requesters, including patient, healthcare providers, insurance companies and legal representatives; verifies requestor has legal right to patient medical record.
  • Responsible for coordinating release of information for BHHN and SMH
  • Responsible for processing of subpoenas and court orders.
  • Maintains security and confidentiality regulations for record access and review.
  • Performs quality checks on all work to assure accuracy of the release, confidentiality and invoicing.
  • All requests for records are dated and entered into the EMR.
  • Notifies requester when records are available.

  • Associates Degree in Health Information, Business or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Medical Office Assistant certification is acceptable or an equivalent two years of medical office experience.
  • Minimum two years’ experience in healthcare release of information preferred
  • Medical terminology desirable.
  • Anatomy/physiology desirable.

Additional Skills

  • Willingly accepts additional assignments.
  • Deals with a wide variety of personalities in a professional and tactful manner.
  • Ability to operate designated equipment as specified including computer keyboarding.
  • Intermediate clerical training, including filing and EMR indexing procedures in multiple systems (both numerically and alphabetically).
  • Ability to work under pressure with time constraints.
  • Basic knowledge of medical record content and sequence.
  • Ability to function independently with minimal direction.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including English usage, grammar, punctuation and style.
