Job Summary:

Core responsibilities of this position include:

The Mechanical/Plumbing Technician position is a full-time, 12-month, benefitted position responsible for the overall inspection, maintenance, installation and repair of building plumbing/mechanical systems, including domestic water, irrigation water, sanitary sewer, storm sewer and hydronic heating and cooling systems. Example responsibilities include but are not limited to knowledge of, repair, and/or complete installation of gas distribution systems; water distribution systems; fire suppression systems; irrigation systems; hydrants; well and drinking water supply systems; and oversight of safe drinking water via being a certified backflow prevention technician. This position ensures a productive working and learning environment for students, faculty, and staff by providing excellent customer service, professional appearance, timely work and expert communication skills. Responsibilities also include but are not limited to: respond to service requests; provides installation, maintenance and repairs to applicable systems. Must be able to operate, Building Automation System (BAS) along with maintenance, install, and repair various parts and components. This position will evaluate & inspect facility and site conditions to report required repairs and preventative maintenance actions. This position also contacts, supervises, and monitors completion of contracted/warrantied work for repairs, assessment, and improvements. This job supports overall department projects, assists in other functional areas, and provides risk management mitigation to all aspects of the job while following and supporting safety procedures, and actively monitoring workplace/jobsite safety.

Compensation: This is a Classified 8 position. Starting hourly wage: $24.49/hr.

Essential Functions:

Essential Functions: (to perform successfully in this position, an individual must be able to perform essential duties satisfactorily as well as possess education/experience, employ the knowledge, skills, and abilities as listed in representative fashion; reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions – this position is Non-Exempt, is eligible for compensatory or overtime pay provisions of the FLSA. Mechanical/Plumbing Install/Repair/Maintenance Functions:

  • Respond to request for service calls/work orders and make repairs as necessary

  • Inspect and test systems/parts/equipment/fixtures to verify compliance with plans, operational status, and specifications or to detect need for repair/replacement

  • Communicate with College end users regarding structure/equipment malfunctions to isolate problems or to verify that repairs corrected malfunctions

  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance for the College’s mechanical/plumbing system needs

  • Perform daily, weekly, and monthly inspections for assigned areas of responsibility

  • Install, operate, maintain, and repair indoor/outdoor fixtures, equipment, and systems

  • Study blueprints, design specifications, or manufacturers' recommendations to verify the configuration and to ensure the proper installation of components

  • Assemble, position, and mount components and parts following blueprints or manufacturer's

  • Facilitate installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs including, but not limited to repairs to gas distribution systems; water distribution systems; fire suppression systems; irrigation systems; hydrants; well and drinking water supply systems; and oversight of safe drinking water via being a certified backflow prevention technician
  • Conducts maintenance and repair of commercial heating and air conditioning equipment, kitchen equipment and or including building automation system, and other college equipment as needed

  • Contact, coordinate, supervise, and quality control of work done by service vendors, warranty repairs, and contracted installation

  • Mechanical/Plumbing and site maintenance support such as support contractor installations, new construction and overall project support

  • Prep jobsites including masking, relocating equipment, and protecting surfaces from work performed (i.e. dust, demolition, and installation)

  • Performs or arranges for performance of back flow tasks/duties, including annual testing of back flow devices and cleaning of grease traps

  • Installs maintains and repairs sinks, showers, hose bibs, eye wash stations, water heaters, air handler coils, water fountains, mixing valves, automatic and manual valves, Pressure reducing valves, backflow valves and pumps

  • Provides on the job training related to this technical expertise, organizes warehouse materials and equipment, perform snow removal and supervision/coordination of part-time employee’s as required

  • Maintain, repair, and install kitchen equipment (i.e. stacker steamer, grills, ovens, ice makers, etc)

  • Order and maintain inventory/schedule for parts, services, equipment and tools

  • Safely drive vehicles, and operate large complex maintenance equipment

Department Support Functions:

  • Perform related duties as delegated by supervision

  • Provide excellent customer service by displaying a professional image to include neat appearance, proper hygiene and appropriate attire

  • Participate in all duties as a professional team member, provide security and confidentiality of personnel information and equipment

  • Provide excellent customer service by utilizing professional and effective language, communication and timely follow-through

  • Responds to emergency duties after hours when required

  • Comply with all applicable Department and College standards, policies, or procedures, such as safety procedures or the maintenance of a clean work area

  • Attend all mandatory department, work group, and college trainings/meetings

  • Follows OSHA and college safety practices, regulations, and procedures

  • Perform snow removal and supervision/coordination of part-time employees as required

  • Provide support and assistance to other department functional areas as needed

Administrative Functions:

  • Utilize electronic devices (computers or tablets) for completion and documentation of work orders and preventative maintenance

  • Organize and maintain warehouse materials, equipment, inventories, and documentation

  • Manage, reconcile, and complete necessary documentation for budgets, monthly purchase orders, and purchase card receipts

  • Coordinate and communicate with other college departments regarding necessary forms, documentation, or completion of processes as related to this position

Other tasks may be assigned based on contemporary institutional need

Nonessential Functions:

An employee in this position may perform some of these responsibilities on an infrequent basis.

  • Operates a skid-loader, backhoe, and other equipment for plumbing tasks and snow removal

  • Work with security and necessary departments during emergency situations, such as threats, gas leaks, inclement weather, etc.

  • Keep informed of changing requirements and new techniques via professional development activities

  • As required attend college, division, and program trainings/meetings. Overnight travel may be required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of mechanical/plumbing repair with a working knowledge of maintenance of commercial buildings and equipment

  • Ability to properly and safely operate equipment/power tools used in installation and maintenance tasks

  • Trade skills in building construction practices and the ability to read and comprehend commercial building and equipment blueprints is required

  • Trade skills in mechanical/plumbing equipment installations, troubleshooting, and repair

  • Must be able to drive vehicles, and operate large complex maintenance equipment

  • Must have a valid Wyoming driver's license and be able to meet the colleges

  • Ability to interpret building blueprints, manufacture installation/repair instructions, and safety data sheets

  • Knowledge of OSHA requirements and building code regulations; ability to learn, interpret and apply current pertinent federal, state and local laws and regulations

  • Working knowledge and ability with personal computing applications – specifically Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint), Adobe products (e.g., Reader, Professional), as well as database management systems

  • Ability to read and interpret instructions in oral, written, or diagrammatical form (e.g., a flow chart of a process)

  • Ability to read, interpret and consider possible applications of equipment and building schematics, blueprints, and manufacturer specifications

  • Excellent customer service skills; ability to communicate clearly with a variety of people, in one-to-one and small group settings – either face-to-face, by telephone, or by other electronic means – ability to communicate in an informative manner, effectively listen, and be able to handle escalating situations with concern and confidence

  • Ability to support time-based requests; able to function effectively in a multi-tasking, fast-paced environment with deadlines, frequent interruptions, and some interpersonal pressure

  • Ability to deal effectively and professionally with people; proven capabilities in establishing appropriate professional rapport, with courtesy and tact, to accurately determine other’s needs, collect necessary information, and follow-through when requested

  • Knowledge of basic office equipment including (but not limited to) personal computer and associated peripherals, fax machine, multi-line telephone, voice recorders, and other electronic devices

Physical/Mental Demands:

  • While performing the essential duties of this position, an employee would frequently be required to squat, bend, twist, kneel, sit, stand, climb, and extend arms over head

  • Work in assorted environments and conditions above ceilings, on roofs, outside, inside, mechanical rooms, tunnels, labs, arena, hallways, meeting rooms and various campus facilities

  • Exposure to and use of safety equipment for outdoor weather extremes for extended periods

  • Exposure to and use of safety equipment for hazardous materials, bio-hazards, chemicals, electrical equipment and fuels/petroleum products

  • May be required to climb ladders, maneuver in confined spaces, and work with tools/equipment in unconventional positions

  • The ability to comply with highly inflexible deadlines is required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position; there will be multiple occurrences of sudden, urgent task completion required

  • While performing the essential functions of this position a variable work schedule may be required including long workdays, evenings, on-call service, and weekends as needed

  • There may be occurrences of interacting with employees and/or students, past employees and/or students, members of the general public, and others who express opinions, may exhibit strong emotions, which will require the employee to interact professionally, diplomatically, and appropriately in such situations

  • There may be multiple/daily instances of prolonged sitting, standing, and personal computer use, which would include keyboard and/or mouse usage as well as viewing a computer monitor

  • To perform the essential functions of this position an employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; the use of team lift techniques is required for lifts over 50 pounds

  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus

  • The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focal point quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple projects and jobs along with being able to respond quickly to emergency situations

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, there may be unexpected instances of somewhat loud sounds

  • The essential functions of this position require the ability to work in an industrial setting including but not limited to working with/on roof tops, in confined spaces, electrical equipment, complex machines, and chemicals; appropriate safety precautions, equipment, and procedures must be utilized at all times

Qualifications:

Minimum:

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent

  • Licensed Journeyman Plumber

  • Certified backflow prevention technician or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to meet the college insurance carrier requirements

Preferred:

  • OSHA 10 certification or capability to attain certification
