We need an individual who subscribes to and supports our commitment as stated. The ideal candidate enjoys administer treatments to animals admitted to the Veterinary Medical Teaching hospital under the supervision of the faculty; provides clinical assistance to the clinicians, residents and interns. What you need to knowThe Work Schedule for this position is Friday – Monday; 8:00pm – 9:00am. Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless/until relieved by their direct supervisor.Cover Letter/Resume’/References: A cover letter, resume, and contact information for three professional references (do include at least one previous supervisor) are strongly recommended. Departments will provide the procedures to be followed at each step of the recruiting process.Required Education and Experience:Associate's degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Basic computer skills

May require working alternate shifts, holidays, weekends, or on-call duty

Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

Other Requirements or Other Factors:Able to work around animals, hay, or dust

Able to lift heavy loads

Preferred Education and Experience:One-year experience in a veterinary medical setting

Preferred Knowledge and Skills:General understanding of equipment used in a veterinary medical teaching hospital

Preferred Licenses, Certifications and Registrations:Certification as a Licensed Veterinary Technician

Certification as a Veterinary Technician Specialist (ECC, Anesthesia, or Internal Medicine)

Responsibilities:Coverage of Emergency Receiving Service - Triages patients admitted to the SA-ER service. Monitors patients to detect changes in clinical status. Performs treatments and administers medications as directed by the attending clinician. Administers and monitors fluid therapy. Performs pain score assessments. Maintains clean and sanitary patient environment.

Performs medical procedures per clinician's directions - Places and maintains IV catheters. Places and maintains urinary catheters. Places and maintains nasal cannulas and nasal prongs for oxygen therapy. Places and maintains bandages. Performs wound management. Anesthetizes and monitors patients for minor procedures.

Provides life-sustaining emergency care - Performs CPCR and defibrillation. Provides oxygen therapy. Instructs and supervises students in CPCR techniques. Maintains crash cart, anesthesia machine, and other equipment and supplies needed for CPCR.

Instructs and guides Veterinary Students - Instructs veterinary students in emergency procedures and principles. Provides supervision of students performing emergency procedures. Participates in continuing education seminars. Participates in laboratory instruction and instruction of the clinical skills lab.

Maintains complete and accurate medical records - Records data regarding patient’s physical, mental, medical and vital sign status. Records all medications administered. Records fluid types and volumes administered. Records information regarding urine output, mentation, appetite and other parameters as needed. Records changes in treatment orders, as directed by the clinician. Captures fees and inputs fees into the VMIS system.

Assists with laboratory monitoring - Performs laboratory tests (NOVA, IDEXX CBC, IDEXX Chemistry panel, IDEXX Urinalysis, ISTAT Chem 8, spot glucose, lactate, PCV/TS, PT/PTT, VCM, blood typing, snap tests, etc.). Assists clinicians and students with laboratory sample collection. Performs service and maintenance of equipment.

Back-up Duties - Provides oversight of patients housed in isolation. Works alternate shifts, holidays, weekends. Participates in rotating on-call duty as required. Maintains certification or licensure where appropriate; radiation safety, infection control, and aseptic technique. Participates in clinical and basic research programs as needed (<3%) Other duties as required. Performs other duties as assigned.
