EPD’s Air, Land and Watershed Protection Branches, in concert with its seven District Offices, serve the public by implementing state laws, rules, and policies to protect human health and the environment; apply and enforce environmental laws and standards in a consistent, fair, and timely manner; and are proactive, results-oriented, and help develop new approaches to meet Georgia’s environmental challenges.Watershed Protection BranchThe Watershed Protection Branch (WPB) protects and restores Georgia’s water resources. We take the lead in ensuring clean and safe water, and with our partners, we pursue a sustainable environment that provides a foundation for a vibrant economy and healthy communities. The Branch manages water resources in Georgia through regulatory and protection programs, monitoring, assessment and planning. The Branch issues permits to local governments and industry to discharge treated wastewater and stormwater and to local governments, industry, farmers and subdivisions for surface water and groundwater withdrawals. The Branch ensures that Georgia's public water systems are operating properly to supply safe drinking water to citizens, and controls nonpoint sources of pollution through grants and volunteer programs such as Rivers Alive and Adopt-a-Stream. The Branch also conducts monitoring and modeling of Georgia's waters.Duties and ResponsibilitiesUnder supervision, studies the composition, structure and other physical aspects of the earth. Examines minerals, underground water, waste disposal, land reclamation or other environmental problems to determine physical and chemical properties to ensure quality standards. Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: assembles, operates, and maintains field and laboratory testing, measuring and mechanical equipment; collects and prepares solid and fluid samples for analysis; conducts ground water/surface water and methane monitoring system inspections; audits field sampling techniques; evaluates site investigations and remediation system design for petroleum releases from storage tanks and pipeline facilities; identifies risks for natural disasters such as mud slides and provide advice on ways in which potential damage can be mitigated; inspects construction projects in order to analyze problems, applying geological knowledge and using testing equipment and drilling machinery; locates and estimates probable natural gas, strata, mineral deposits, underground water resources using charts, research and survey results; performs studies of bridge foundations, soil surveys, and retaining walls; prepares related reports; and plots information from aerial photographs, well logs, section descriptions, and other databases. Field work and occasional overnight travel may be required.Based on education and experience, the selectee will be hired into one of the job codes below.
