Cedars Fine Art Studio Art Instructor

Job Summary:

As CFAS Art Instructor you must possess excellent organizational and planning skills; along with the ability to effectively coordinate competing interests. Compassion, effective communication, and creative problem-solving, will determine success.

As part of the Cedars team, the CFAS Art Instructor will display an understanding that adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities deserve to be treated with empathy and compassion, not coercive manipulation and arbitrary restrictions on their movement and choice.

Essential Functions:

1. Identify strengths and preferences of each artist and help them develop the skills to create gallery ready portfolios.

2. Develop artistic goals for individuals.

3. Must be Technically savvy. Can teach art remotely and in person. Can problem solve basic technology (helping participants get online, login, etc). Flexible and agile: for example can drive, drop off supplies, do a quick “how to get on Zoom lessons.”, then get online and teach a class.

4. Assist program participants with developing personal goals within the program.

5. Teach small classes on a daily basis, any of these areas: performance art, (music, dance), 3- D art (including designing for 3-D printers), fine art (drawing, painting) bookmaking, silk screen, wearable art,

Someone who can teach art it in a simple language, creatively, with patience.

6. Assist with or handle the detail work of the artist’s projects and organizes small tasks as needed for individuals.

7. Write annual reports/evaluations using excellent written and editing skills.

8. Recognize and report poor behavior and handle such behavior without interfering with the rights of the program participants.

9. Recognize and submit written reports regarding seizure activity, evidence of impending illness and changes in physical or emotional condition.

10. Guide and lead adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in variety of projects within our program while presenting fun, cheerful, energetic classes.

11. Treat individuals with dignity and respect while helping foster skill learning and independence.

12. Ensure safety and safe working environment at all times.

13. Maintain professional conduct and attitude at all times.

14. Loves to experiment with ideas and loves to pass on the joy of trying new things to our artists.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Responsible for the health, safety, general happiness and care of the program participants.

2. Maintain current First Aid and CPR certifications.

3. Provide First Aid and CPR as needed.

4. Be prompt and dependable in attendance.

5. Attend weekly staff meetings.

6. Work well, cooperate and respond appropriately to constructive criticism from supervisors and other employees.

7. Communicate with individuals, other staff, parents and visitors in a positive, non-threatening, responsive and helpful manner.

8. Maintain required CEU’s by participating in staff meetings and in-service training as required by the program.

9. Follow standard operating procedures for off-campus outings.

10. Clean work areas, kitchen, bathrooms before, during and after program hours to maintain a clean clutter-free environment.

11. Responsible for day to day upkeep of equipment and supply levels of indoor and outdoor activity areas.

12. Report maintenance needs to Supervisor and/or the Facilities Manager.

13. Other duties as required by supervisor.

Job Qualifications:

1. Art degree or a producing artist.

2. Experience in working with intellectually/developmentally disabled adults is helpful.

3. Willingness to teach and guide adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities while helping individuals to lead positive, productive lives.

4. Ability to work well as a group leader or as part of a team of leaders. Flexibility in varied job assignments

5. Willingness to pitch in when/where needed.

6. CA driver’s license and clean DMV record

7. Ability to drive a Cedars passenger van.

8. Upbeat, positive attitude and good sense of humor a plus.

9. Ability to communicate effectively in English (speaking and writing)

10. Excellent attendance and punctuality.

11. Must be able to pass all required pre-hire screening checks,

12. Must maintain a clearance at Community Care Licensing (fingerprint clearance)

Physical Requirements:

1. Maintain dexterity, vision and coordination, sufficient to lead and participate in vocational activities, walks and hikes in the community, and exercise classes with people with developmental disabilities.

2. Ability to walk and stand for potentially six or more hours per day.

3. Must be able to assist an adult from a prone position on the ground into a standing position or into a chair.

4. Requires the ability to be mobile (including, but not limited to, bending, squatting, crouching, twisting, kneeling, reaching, etc.) when working with individuals while teaching any structured activity.

5. Must have the sight and hearing sufficient to remain completely aware of the surrounding situation when engaged in teaching, particularly in the community.

6. Applicant must be free of any physical condition which, in the opinion of the physician doing the pre-employment physical exam could be substantially aggravated by the job requirements or result in injury to the applicant or to the program participants of Cedars.
