Position Summary

This position uses the Sanctuary Organ and other keyboard instruments for presenting music that is used as a tool for praising God, strengthening people’s faith, enhancing worship, and supporting the music ministry of the Sanctuary Choir.

Intended Outcomes and Accountabilities

1. Play the organ and other keyboard instruments at a musical level that enhances the worship of God and the ministry of the church.

2. Provide accompaniment for the Sanctuary Choir.

Reporting Line

The Church Organist reports to the Director of Music and serves as a member of the Presbyterian Church staff.

Responsibilities and Duties

1. Select all organ service music, in collaboration with the Senior Pastor and the Director of Music, in keeping with the worship style established for the music ministry of the church.

2. Perform for Sunday and special worship services.

3. Perform as the Principal Accompanist for the Sanctuary Choir.

4. Attend Sanctuary Choir rehearsals.

5. Arrange for a substitute organist if unable to be present at a rehearsal, worship service, presentation, or other event.

6. Rehearse with persons providing special music.

7. Accompany soloists and other special musical ensembles during worship as needed.

8. Maintain the option of playing at all church weddings, funerals, and memorial services.

(Exceptions may be made by the Director of Music or Head of Staff.)

9. Play at other church events, when needed by the Sanctuary Choir, other church ensembles, or soloists.

10. Recommend needed organ or keyboard instrument repair to the Director of Music.

11. Accompany other groups when possible, as requested by the Director of Music.

Qualifications

Education:

Minimum of a four-year degree in music education, sacred music, music or a non-music degree with an emphasis in music.

Organ/Piano (Keyboard) major with accompanying or performance emphasis preferred.

Professional experience:

Previous experience as a church organist and/or accompanist.

Values:

Demonstrates commitment to Christian ministry through past personal and/or professional experience.

Background Check:

Must authorize a criminal history and protective service background check to assess suitability for employment.

Physical Conditions

Well-lighted, clean, smoke-free surroundings.

Principle instruments: 3 manual 66 rank Allen Digital Organ and Kawai UST- 7 piano.
