Publix s Information Services (I/S) department is located in Lakeland, Florida and Alpharetta, Georgia and employs over 1000 associates. I/S provides the information technology required for all Publix business units including retail stores and all office and warehouse environments. The Publix I/S mission is to maximize the value of information technology to Publix associates and customers.The Publix Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) team is seeking an experienced Apache Kafka systems engineer to join it s other engineers in supporting the EAI toolset. EAI involves creating and maintaining the system infrastructure that allows Publix business systems to communicate via middleware such as message queueing, event streaming, file transfer, AS2, and other data transfer technologies. Examples of the tools implemented and supported by the Publix EAI team are IBM WebSphere MQ, Apache Kafka, Biztalk, Axway Synchrony Transfer (CFT), and Axway B2Bi. EAI engineers are expected to become fluent in all of these technologies and participate in troubleshooting and remediation as part of a 24/7 support rotation. Systems Engineering involves defining, developing, maintaining, and advising on the effective use of information technologies to maximize their value to Publix. The EAI engineering staff is responsible for EAI tool installations and configurations, support and maintenance, security vulnerability remediations, and user assistance. Some examples of systems engineering tasks include:

  • Support of Apache Kafka, Axway CFT, Axway Interchange, MSMQ, and IBM MQ. This includes managing incidents and help requests from our users. Most of these tools run on both Windows and Linux so knowledge of both is required,
  • Systems and project design and architecture delivering solutions of high quality and reliability,
  • Software installation, configuration, integration, and support,
  • System management, monitoring, and tuning activities,
  • Provide 24/7 on-call support for assigned technologies as part of a team rotation,
  • Problem determination resolution and documentation,
  • Systems security and vulnerability remediation,
  • Project team participation, and
  • New technology awareness, research, and system integration.
  • Bachelor s Degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Science or analytical discipline, or equivalent experience,
  • 2 years I/T experience,
  • 2 or more years of maintenance and support of Apache Kafka, Zookeeper, and related infrastructure software in a medium to large environment,
  • Technical knowledge of, and experience supporting, Microsoft Windows Serveroperating systems and its ecosystem of enterprise technologies such as Active Directory, Group Policy, Network Shares and file security, SSL, etc.,
  • Technical knowledge of, and experience utilizing, Red Hat or another flavor of Linux,
  • Strong problem determination skills and the ability to solve issues such as a service not starting, a file cannot be read or written locally or over a network share, a server cannot communicate with another server over the network, etc.
  • Ability to be in the rotation of a 24/7 support team.
  • Good understanding of System Development Lifecycle (SDLC) methodologies.
  • 3 years of experience designing, planning, implementing, and supporting large software releases.
  • Experience with Ansible or Ansible Tower.
  • Experience with monitoring and metric tools such as Prometheus, AlertManager, and Grafana
  • Experience with PowerShell or other scripting languages.
  • Experience with automating application installation and configuration.
  • Experience reading system and trace logs and with problem determination tools such as Splunk or Wireshark.
  • Experience working with vulnerability management tools, and remediation activities.
  • Experience working in a process structured environment which includes Change Management, Incident ticketing, and Disaster Recovery preparedness.
  • Experience leading projects from requirements through implementation.
  • In-depth experience implementing, migrating, managing, and administering tools in a large corporate environment.
  • Experience working in HP Service Manager, working incidents to completion.
  • Ability to anticipate and identify issues that conflict with security and compliance requirements.
  • Ability to resolve complex business and technical issues by making decisions using sound business judgment.
  • Solid understanding of the functional and operational practices necessary to operate in a highly available, highly secure, and highly regulated environment to meet business, security, and compliance requirements.
