Facebook is seeking a forward thinking, experienced IT professional with technical leadership experience and skills in Server Hardware, Non-Standard high performance compute, Linux, Storage/Tape, and/or Networking, ideally in a data center environment. Our data centers, and the tens of thousands of servers installed in them, are the foundation upon which our rapidly scaling infrastructure efficiently operates and on which our innovative services are delivered. Our Product Hardware Platform Engineers are responsible for the performance of the compute and storage platforms in our data centers. They are responsible for the health of the server fleet, from production verification test through end-of-life. Responsibilities include identifying systemic hardware, firmware, and tooling issues; engaging in hands-on problem solving; and collaborating effectively with engineering, tooling, and onsite provisioning and break-fix teams to improve performance of the fleet. This position requires a high degree of ownership and understanding of our platforms, leveraging technical expertise and using data to identify trends across the fleet and proactively identify and mitigate performance and reliability issues. Excellent organizational skills and the ability to collaborate with multiple teams in a large scale, distributed environment are required to be effective in this role.

  • Serve as subject matter expert for compute and storage platforms in Facebook's production data centers, anticipating and diagnosing issues for the data center operations teams, and escalating as appropriate to hardware design and NPI teams
  • Provide end-to-end lifecycle ownership (verification test through end of life decommissioning) of hardware platforms and new technologies in the data centers
  • Drive complex technical investigations globally and spanning multiple disciplines such as Hardware, Software/Firmware, Networking and Power & Cooling
  • Analyze health of the global fleet of servers to proactively identify systemic issues, and take appropriate action to quickly mitigate impact
  • Work closely with HW Engineering, Release-to-Production, and Operations Integration teams to take new server and storage platforms into mass production in the data centers
  • Identify risks early in new hardware programs and contribute the test methods needed to characterize the product and assure end-customer needs are met
  • Act as product owner for specific server and/or storage platforms. Ensure that outcomes of root cause analysis are addressed, in collaboration with hardware and software engineering teams
  • Issue timely alerts and fixes to operations teams, and assure a robust feedback pipeline to engineering teams
  • Build strong relationships and collaboration with engineering and cross functional teams across the company. Actively solicit feedback from teams, and use that feedback to improve operational effectiveness as infrastructure scales
  • Provide serviceability feedback on production hardware resulting in more efficient repair activities
  • Ability to travel up to 30% required
  • BS or BA in electrical, mechanical, or hardware engineering
  • 6+ years of experience with Linux and IT hardware systems in an internet operations environment
  • Experience triaging and debugging hardware platforms
  • Experience working with Linux or Unix Operating systems
  • Experience training and mentoring technicians and/or engineers
  • Demonstrated technical skills and experience creating documentation for users of all levels
  • Communication experience and interpersonal skills, with the experience communicating and partnering effectively within all levels of the organization
  • Experience in integration testing and operation of compute and storage platforms, bringing operational perspective to each stage of H/W development life cycle through end of life in production
  • Experience with building relationships with customers and vendors
  • Expert at leveraging large volumes of data to improve decision making processes in the hardware functional domain (understanding the metrics and statistics)
  • Bash, PHP, Python, or Perl scripting experience
  • Experience in data center system and process automation
  • Experience in large scale data center hardware deployments and building scaling infrastructure
