POSITION TITLE: Ag. Specialist I

FLSA STATUS: Full-time, Non-Exempt, Temporary

COMPENSATION: $15.96

PROGRAM/POSITION IDENTIFICATION

The Cooperative Agricultural Support Services (CASS) is a Joint Powers Authority that assists in protecting and supporting California's Avocado industry and the consumers of its products by providing services and staff who fairly, impartially, and dependably carry out their work.

Under the general direction of a CASS Supervisor, , Agricultural Specialist I participate in carrying out enforcement of provisions for maturity, quality, size, packing, and container requirements in accordance with industry regulations.

The incumbent in this position provides program support by performing of field work while conforming to the federal, state, county and CASS policies in carrying out work activities.

II. ESSENTIAL AND NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

A. Essential Functions:

Under the general direction of a designated supervisor or lead, as well as operating within established guidelines and procedures, the incumbent in this position works in a variety of field settings with limited oversight.

Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Operational Processes – 90%

Determine, through contact with customers, needs necessary to meet industry requests for service.

Enforcement of provisions for maturity, quality, size, packing, and container marking.

Review, and correct as necessary, field notes, certificates, Inspectors Daily Reports and any other inspection documents.

Forward accurate certifications in a timely manner for processing.

Keep complete and accurate records.

Ensure an adequate level of service to the clients in the industry.

2. Training – 5%

Participate in job-related training to enhance skills.

B. Nonessential Functions

None

3. Miscellaneous Program Support – 5%

Attend meetings as necessary

Attend industry meetings, as directed, to represent the Shipping Point and CASS programs

Assist Compliance Program Supervisor with all work in district.

III. WORK ENVIRONMENT

Duties for the job are primarily performed inside packing houses. Weather, temperature, lighting and noise levels may constantly vary. Terrain may vary from smooth and stable to irregular and unstable. The incumbent may be regularly exposed to dust, pollen, moisture, and forklifts associated with shipment activities. Driving a vehicle, as well as entering and exiting the vehicle numerous times throughout the workday, is required. Interaction with the public is also required.

IV. INDIVIDUAL REQUIREMENTS

The incumbent in this position must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships; work well under pressure; work independently; and, work cooperatively with other staff members in completing assigned work and meeting required deadlines. The incumbent must have knowledge of current methods, terminology, materials, and equipment used in grading and inspection; safety techniques, and requirements; and applicable sections of the California Avocado Commission and must be involved in current projects with all applicable agencies. Due to the nature of the industry, this work requires that employees be available for overtime, weekend work, and working on holidays.

Attendance, punctuality and dependability are essential to the proper operation of CASS’s program. If unable to report for work on time or as scheduled, the incumbent must call a supervisor or lead person at least one hour before scheduled starting time. This allows for supervision to provide a replacement to cover the incumbent’s work shift. If delayed, for any reason, while traveling to report to work, ensure a supervisor or lead is contacted immediately, in order that management may assign a replacement to minimize a lapse in shift coverage.

V. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The incumbent in this position will be required, with or without reasonable accommodation, to lift up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis; use repetitive arm and wrist motions; bend, stoop, twist, reach, go into packing houses and maintain visual acuity to ensure proper inspection of commodity. The incumbent must have a valid driver license and acceptable driving record during the course of employment.
