(sorry no new grads or interns) Manufacturing Engineering team in El Segundo is seeking an experienced manufacturing engineer to support space and airborne Electronic Assembly Operation / production factory in low-volume, high reliability Circuit Card Assembly (CCA) and modules for space and airborne programs. As a Sr. Manufacturing Engineer, selected candidate will: Support all aspects of electronics assembly, including Surface Mount Technology (SMT) and through-hole assembly, convection reflow, hardware installation, cleaning, staking, conformal coating, and encapsulation.

Define CCA production work flow

Develop solutions to production issues

Prepare Assembly Instructions and planning packages

Develop, qualify, and document new manufacturing processes or modify existing processes to fit the requirements of new products.

Review workmanship and prepare non-compliance documents or disposition them

Generates tooling plans, i.e., 3D printing, machining, etc.

Work closely with operations and train technicians on how to implement planning instructions to build new circuit card assemblies.

Prepare Assembly Instructions (AI) to build or rework electronic components on CCAs

Conducts in process and as well as final inspections

Work closely with Quality Engineering, Responsible Engineering Authority (REA), Material and Process (M&P), Parts Control, Industrial Engineering and customers to resolve manufacturing and process issues.

Identify, design, procure, and validate fixtures & tools. Support factory equipment selection process to meet production plans.

Participate in Materials Review Board (MRB) to disposition non-conforming material and write rework instructions.

Analyze defect data and determine root cause and corrective actions to maximize process yield and reliability

As a technical manufacturing engineer, the candidate should be:

An expert in manual soldering and Hot Air Pencil (HAP) manufacturing issues and related specifications.

Be able to program and operate automated manufacturing equipment such as SMT pick and place, solder reflow, die attach, wire bond, X-Ray inspection, and other types of CCA manufacturing machines.

Able to analyze our manufacturing roadmap and identify appropriate equipment to acquire to be able to build those products when the need arises.

This position involves direct support of manufacturing activities and requires spending significant amounts of time in CCA factory.

Hands on experience in these processes/ equipment is highly sought: Cleaning CCA, Lead Forming, Leak Testing, Pressurization Test, Parylene and Arathane Conformal Coating, Die Attach, Wirebond, AirVac, Mass Reflow Oven, etc.

This candidate must be open to the Second Shift support. Overtime may be required.

Basic Qualifications:

4 to 8+ years’ experience in circuit card assembly or microelectronics manufacturing, processes, material and development.

Hands-on experience on assembly processes and factory equipment.

Experience developing work instructions and manufacturing planning packages

Previous responsibility for the factory equipment support and maintenance

Experience contributing to design reviews and specifications acting as an equipment expert for manufacturability

Design of Experiment (DOE) techniques, and Process Reviews.

Working proficiency with PFMEA methodology and implementation

Statistical Process Control (SPC) knowledge and experience applying statistical methods to track and improve process capability

Hands-on Manufacturing Engineer with continuous improvement experience building hardware

Past experience working in a clean room environment

Analyze defect trends for corrective actions using Six Sigma processes.

Proficiency in documentation and analysis of results using Excel, Access, Word As well as VM, SAP

Must be willing to work overtime and all shifts, weekends and/or holidays, as needed.

Knowledge in electrical and mechanical assembly and inspection requirements including current industry standards

Desired Skills:

In-depth knowledge of physical, electrical, soldering process, and material requirements affecting the design and functionality of CCAs.

Knowledge and experience in analytical evaluation techniques and testing of microelectronic and Chip on Board CCAs.

In-depth “hands-on” Programming and Troubleshooting experience on automated equipment

In-depth knowledge of manufacturing requirements and specs for space systems

Strong understanding of the Industry standards like J-STD-001, and NASA standards

6 Sigma and Lean Manufacturing

Ability to work flexible hours and/or different shifts, if needed.

Good communication and people skills

Ability to work under broad direction and guidelines

Required Education:

B.S. or Higher Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, or Physics Engineering

BS and 4-8 years of experience.

Desired Education:

MS and 2-6 years of experience

U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position will require the ability to access US only data systems.
