The Team

We are hiring a System Chemistry Technical Manager as part of our Materials & Chemistry Network of Excellence Team, which is part of our Global Advanced Technology Organization. The mission of the Materials & Chemistry Network of Excellence is to enable product innovation and differentiation through leading-edge materials and chemistry technologies. We do this by leveraging internal expertise and external partners to accelerate technology implementation and translation across Trane Technologies strategic business units.

The Role

As the System Chemistry Technical Manager, you will be part of our Materials & Chemistry leadership and oversee a team of chemistry professionals and state-of-the art chemistry laboratories to enable unique material and chemistry system solutions in support of new technology introduction, new product development and product quality improvements across the company. You will also collaborate with other technical leaders as part of the broader Materials & Chemistry Network of Excellence, Advanced Technology and Innovation teams, to support technical strategies, assist in evaluation of emerging technologies, and develop advanced testing capabilities internally and with external partners. This position will allow you to work in a hybrid work environment.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Align on high-priority annual business growth and operational excellence goals and needs with a broad customer base and stakeholders across the company.
  • Meet these goals and needs by prioritizing requests and flexing resources to balance strategic longer-term initiatives with shorter term deliverables.
  • Manage portfolio of system chemistry projects, including budgets, resource plans, project execution and reporting with direct team and technical leadership peers.
  • Work closely with Procurement, Manufacturing, and other functions to provide consulting and engineering services to meet the company’s operational goals.
  • Use Stage-Gate process, Design-of-Experiments methods to assure high quality of lab testing results and successful completion of projects.
  • Coach and grow system chemistry talent and leading-edge testing capabilities for refrigerants, lubricants, indoor environment quality chemistries, and other materials.
  • Lead strategy, technology, and application development initiatives in applied system chemistry across Trane Technologies products and solutions.
  • Collaborate with external partners to assess emerging technologies and capabilities, accelerate technology development and build interest within the company. Network with industry associations to influence standards and promote the company.

Candidate Profile:

  • Strong technical background and problem-solving skills in chemical sciences with a minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, or other relevant science or engineering degree. Master’s degree is preferred. PhD also considered.
  • 10+ years of industrial leadership, including a system chemistry lab environment, developing and coaching high-performance talent to consistently achieve desired results and apply learnings to address business needs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and practice in Design for Six Sigma techniques and Lean thinking.
  • Excellent verbal, written, presentation and interpersonal skills. Able to convey business implications of complex technical findings and externally represent the best interests of the company.
  • Knowledge in Refrigerant and Lubricant Systems, Indoor Environment Quality Chemistries in HVAC systems also desired.
  • Research and intellectual property portfolio management experience with a track record of patents and publications a plus.
  • Externally networked with relevant supply base and industry associations beneficial.
