Eligibility may vary.Position descriptionThe Switchboard Operator utilizes an electronic directory database and is responsible for processing incoming and outgoing calls for Mayo Clinic Health System patients, visitors, staff, and the general public - providing necessary communication assistance in a variety of situations. In accordance with established hospital policies, the operator is responsible for following all general and emergency procedures accurately and in a timely manner which includes making phone calls, overhead announcements, pages, and other electronic notifications. Switchboard Operators assist all callers in a polite, articulate, professional, and clear manner. Ability to search phonetically in a database is required.In addition, the Switchboard Operator may be responsible for the accurate check-in/admissions of incoming patients in the hospital setting as well as ED setting. This includes the verification of patient demographic information, collection of insurance data, the identification and/or creation of appropriate accounts The Switchboard Operator is required to ensure patient safety using positive patient identification protocols and obtain the appropriate consents as required. This role requires adherence to quality assurance guidelines.Because the department is operational 24 hours a day, preparedness to work any shifts is required of all operators. May be responsible for other duties as directed.QualificationsMinimum Education: High School Diploma or GED requiredAdditional Requirements include:Ability to read and communicate effectivelyBasic computer/keyboarding skills, intermediate mathematic competencyGood written and verbal communication skillsKnowledge of proper phone etiquette and phone handling skillsAdditional qualificationsPosition requires good communication skills. Prior desk, appointment, or secretarial experience and a working knowledge of scheduling systems and procedures are preferred. Must have the ability to interact on a professional level with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
