Under supervision, serve in the Parentage and Diagnostic Test Analysis section of the Veterinary Genetics Lab, as first-pass parentage analyst for species including but not limited to : horse, goat, pig, cattle, alpaca, elk and sheep.

Assist with reporting and communicating with clients the results of genetic diagnostic phenotypic, disease tests and inquires.

Perform DNA fragment analysis. Interact with all units within VGL (sample receiving / processing, genotyping, IT, genetic analysts, test development, and research).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work in a secured animal facility.

Must conform to federal, state and county regulation for safe handling of biological materials.

Must be able to tolerate the sight of blood and foul odors.

Requires adaptability to fluctuating workloads and occasional overtime may be required during heavy work periods.

Vacations must be scheduled accordingly.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Required :

Skill to exercise discretion and protect confidentiality of records.

Knowledge of Mendelian genetics and their application to parentage verification and genetic diagnostic tests as well as the methods of detection

Knowledge of spelling, editing, and grammar for both written and oral correspondence and the skills to communicate by phone and email with laboratory personnel and / or outside customers in a professional and effective manner.

Skill to work with a diverse group of people and in a team-oriented environment and the interpersonal and oral communication skills to effectively interact and coordinate work with others

Skill to effectively prioritize tasks on a daily basis while adjusting to fluctuating sample numbers and the availability of other staff members.

Experience working in a high throughput DNA laboratory and the skill to perform multiple tasks while maintaining a high level of accuracy and productivity.

Preferred :

Ability to operate computers and use analysis software.

Ability to learn detailed procedures quickly and to follow detailed protocols.

Ability to work with minimal supervision and ability to make independent critical decisions.

M.S. Degree in genetics or biological science, or equivalent laboratory experience / training.
