Mercy Health Saint Mary’s 7Main unit focuses on general medical / surgical, orthopedic / trauma, general surgery and general medicine.

Currently there is a large focus on the Orthopedic Surgery patients but may also experience patients being admitted while recovering from basic surgery, all general medicine needs as well.

Average patient stay is 1.5 days so quick patient turnover and very fast paced environment. Relationships are very important due to short patient stay PCA can make / break patient experience.

This unit would provide the most variety for patient populations and is a great starting point for those PCAs new to the acute care environment.

Position Summary :

Patient Care Assistant, PCA works in a collaborative environment to deliver excellent patient care under the direction of a RN.

A Patient Care Assistant, PCA is expected to assist the patient in maintaining good hygiene, activities of daily living and to support quality of patient care.

What Patient Care Assistant, PCA will do :

Respond to patient call lights for assistance or by rounding

Obtaining vital signs from patient

Provide or assist patients with personal hygiene including showers, oral hygiene and dressing / undressing

Transports patients as needed for procedures, transfers or discharge

Maintains a clean and uncluttered environment in patient rooms

What Patient Care Assistant, PCA will need :

High School diploma or equivalent

One of the following : Nurses Aide Certificate (CNA), RN student currently enrolled and has completed two full clinical rotations and / or six months experience as a Patient Care Assistant or Nurse Technician in an acute care setting

BCLS certification

Well developed communication skills, both written and oral

Able to communicate effectively with individuals and groups representing divers perspectives

Articulates and demonstrates commitment to the philosophy, values, mission and vision of the organization
