What You Will DoThe Space Data and Software Systems Group (ISR-3) mission is to respond to changing national and global security challenges through the creation, delivery, and support of reliable, secure, and innovative detection systems in space and around the globe by applying its diverse core capabilities in remote sensing technologies, satellite command, radiation effects and reliability, control and mission processing, and on-board and real-time signal processing and characterization.As a leader in space research for over sixty years, ISR designs, builds, and operates space-based measurement systems to uphold nuclear nonproliferation treaties, provide remote sensing for situational awareness, and enable the study of planetary bodies to advance cosmic research. ISR is a multidisciplinary organization working across government and commercial sectors to lead experiments for NASA, the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command, and other notable agencies, including direct involvement in important missions such as the Curiosity and Perseverance Mars rovers, Van Allen Probes, IBEX, as well as various Agile Space, Situational Space and Space Weather initiatives.The End User Software and Operations team in ISR-3 integrates, operates, manages, and maintains multi-sensor operator interfaces for ground, airborne, and space missions as well as develops software tools and algorithms for real-time data interpretation and operational ground systems for command and control, data acquisition, and data distribution.Candidates for a Scientist 1 position on the End User Software and Operations team should have a strong software development background, practical mathematical experience, and an enthusiasm for creative problem solving. Sharing knowledge and learning from each other is a key element of ISR-3, the ideal candidate is someone that wants to work in a collaborative culture.As a Scientist 1 you may be called to perform the following types of work:Software aspects of the program areas involve some of the following general types of work. This work may be in support of low (hardware interface), mid, or high (application) level software development.

Develop and maintain software applications to support the Intelligence and Space Research Division's needs.

Interface with end users to understand applications requirements, deliverables, and time-frames.

Extract and define software requirements from system level requirements.

Document software through reports and self-documenting source code.

Present results of work at programmatic meetings.

Contribute to continuous software process improvement.

Enhance technical and professional expertise through training.

Contribute to peer review of others' work across organizations or disciplines.

Contribute to the development of progress reports for the project leaders, sponsors, and assist with defining project plans and milestones.

What You NeedMinimum Job Requirements:

Unix/Linux Operating System experience

Programming Experience with Python, C/C, and/or Go.

Experience using revision control tools (SVN, GIT, etc.)

Experience estimating task completion effort

Experience with Atlassian Tools (JIRA, Confluence)

Experience designing or working on a small, medium, or large project

Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as part of a team

Effective written and oral communication skills

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's d degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.Desired Qualifications:

Experience with a formal software development process

Experience with Atlassian Tools API

Experience automating Linux tasks using shell scripts

Experience with the Linux kernel

Experience working on projects that use multiple programming languages

Experience working with sensitive or classified information

Work Environment:Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM.
