What You Will DoCome join a team of staff that are working to digitize, index and digitally curate one of the most mission-critical physical collections at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). You will be on a team working for the National Security Research Center (NSRC) - Digital Collections (DC) Group. The information you digitize and index will have an immediate impact to the Laboratory's mission.You will be working in coordination with one of the largest libraries in the Federal Government, the NSRC. The NSRC is LANL's classified library, containing tens of millions of documents, films, books, and other archival material related to the development, testing and production of nuclear weapons, dating back to the first days of the Manhattan Project. The NSRC's collections contain a breadth of classified technical information related to physics, chemistry, engineering, material science, intelligence, and national security. We are looking for an individual with education and experience in the handling, digitizing, indexing, tracking, storing, and transmitting of electronic and hard copy documentary materials.As a Library Professional 1 you will digitize different types of materials from the NSRC's physical collections with a focus on supporting audio-visual digitization in cooperation with the A/V Lead. You will also help to construct metadata/indexing information that will be used to develop a robust catalog and conduct quality control of digitized materials and their metadata. You will occasionally assist librarians to upload digitized materials into the Online Vault or other access repositories, assist archivists to improve organization and tracking of archived materials and provide information to fulfill customer research requests.This position may be tasked with contributing to the development of workflows for new and existing digitization operations, conducting research for digitization projects, and supporting initiatives to support the needs of WRS-NSRCDC or the NSRC at large. You may be tasked to interact with customers to investigate potential projects, assess materials, and help to develop estimates for project costs and timelines.What You NeedMinimum Job Requirements:Technical KnowledgeExperience in operating at least one type of professional digitizing equipment as well as operating and troubleshooting audio-visual equipment. Proficient at populating indices for small to moderate size collections of documentary materials following archives/library metadata standards. Experience performing quality control/assurance reviews of digital files and their metadata. Experience with assessing collections, supporting the development and implementation of digitization workflows and processes. Must have the ability to learn new technologies, best practices, and workflows for digital archiving and digital preservation.Digitization Workflows & ProcessesA qualified candidate will have experience with assessing collections and supporting the development, implementation, and improvement of digitization workflows and processes.Self-MotivatedYou must be a demonstrated self-starter who is detail oriented and capable of working independently without direct supervision.CommunicationThis role will require you to have excellent written and verbal communication skills, customer service skills and experience in customer-focused communication and relations.CollaborationThe ability to work in a team environment is very important in this role.Education/ExperiencePosition requires a master's degree in Library and Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association and 2 years of experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.Desired Qualifications:LANL FamiliarityUnderstanding of the weapons program within LANL, along with experience working with classified material in a classified environment.Archival Organization ExperienceExperience working in a major archival organization, such as the National Archives and Records Administration, a museum, or a library with significant archival holdings would be helpful. Experience assisting scientists and/or engineers search for relevant materials in a major university, government, or corporate library is desirable.Background KnowledgeExperience working with standard digital archival and library cataloging systems would be helpful. Experience with archival software systems and/or databases, including digital asset preservation systems or archival collection management systems is desired. Familiarity with tools and software to ingest, curate, and deliver born-digital archival material, as well as familiarity with transferring content from a variety of media formats is highly desirable.Born Digital Archiving and PreservationKnowledge and/or experience establishing workflows and capability for processing born-digital archival content and removable media.Continuous LearningDemonstrated experience in continuous learning to enhance knowledge and required skills.ClearanceActive DOE "Q" Clearance is desired but not required.EducationAn American Library Association (ALA) accredited MLS degree, or similar master's degree, specializing in digital archives, digital curation, digital libraries or related subject area is preferred but not required.Training/Certifications:Desire and experience in continued training in library and archive profession related areas. Society of American Archivists (SAA) Digital Archives Specialist (DAS) certification is desirable.Work Environment:Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
