Marimed Foundation is seeking to hire a First Mate for Marimed Foundation's Sailing School Vessel Makani Olu. This position will also serve as a relief Captain in the absence of the current Captain. Summary: Assists in the operation and maintenance of sailing school vessel, small boats, and equipment.

Performs duties and responsibilities listed below and as directed by the Captain.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Participates in the operation, safety, and maintenance of SSV Makani Olu, a 96’ three-masted schooner sailing school vessel.

Operates and maintains small sailing and power vessels, water recreational equipment, and other equipment.

Thorough working knowledge of maintenance procedures for rig, hull, deck, and engineering equipment to include, but not limited to, sails, engine, mechanical systems, electrical systems, and hydraulic systems

Assists in the training of sail trainees aboard vessels or in class, enforcing safety at all times.

Always maintains a safe working environment utilizing proper safety gear as needed. Participates in below deck crew quarters cleaning schedule. Assists with laundry and provisions before and after voyages throughout the year.

Contributes to the overall goals of maritime programs and the ship’s general needs.

Must adhere to Marimed policies and procedures and USCG regulations.

Performs other duties and accepts responsibilities as assigned.

Relationships

Is under the general supervision of the Captain. In the absence of the Captain, reports to the President & CEO. Works with Maritime Careers Exploration Instructors, crewmembers, students, and Marimed Foundation Administrative Staff.

Minimum Qualifications and Other Requirements

A. Education

High school diploma/GED

B. Experience

Must have a 100 ton Master Near Coastal with Auxiliary Sail Endorsement or higher

One year of Watch Officer experience

Must be experienced in various maintenance techniques used aboard traditional vessels including marlinspike seamanship, general surface preparation and protection, basic electronics, and plumbing. Sailing experience preferred but not required.

C. Knowledge, sensitivity, and awareness of various local cultures are a plus. Requires ability to be a team player, to form mutually respectful partnerships with others, to grow professionally in meeting the challenges of this position.

D. Certification/Requirements:

CPR and First Aid (Can be obtained after employment)

Valid Driver’s License

COVID-19 Vaccination, Current TB Test, and Current Tetanus Vaccination

Essential Functions

Must communicate fluently in oral and written English.

Ability to write or print notes, summaries, and reports in legible English.

Frequently lift objects weighing up to 75 pounds.

Ability to pull own body weight upward for two feet by using arms only.

Frequently stand for prolonged periods of time.

Frequently perform work, walk on decks of a ship at sea, climb rigging to a height of 110 feet, and climb ladders without aid of hand held support.

Occasionally walk short distance (up to 12 feet) in a bent over or squatting position.

Must remain awake and alert during entire duty period. This position requires overnight sailing trips (voyages, charters)

Regular attendance at all scheduled hours of duty and meetings unless excused in advance.

Ability to swim.
