Spaulding Marine Center is accepting applications for our Summer Sea Camp sailing and woodworking instructor position.

Who We Are

Spaulding Marine Center is a 501(c)3 facility working to preserve the working waterfront heritage of Sausalito. Along with educational programs, Spaulding Marine Center also has a for profit boatyard which helps to support the educational and public offerings. Our mission to preserve Spaulding Boatworks' heritage as a working and living museum is supported through the education of the next generation of shipwrights and marine service technicians; to restore and return to active use historically significant vessels, such as our flagship Freda; to share with the community maritime history and culture through classes and public programming.

Job Description:

Spaulding Marine Center is seeking enthusiastic and experienced Sailing Summer Camp Instructors to join our team for the upcoming summer season. As a Sailing Summer Camp Instructor, you will play a vital role in creating a positive and educational environment for campers, fostering their love for sailing, teamwork, and maritime heritage.

Responsibilities:

1. Instruct Sailing Lessons: Conduct engaging and informative sailing lessons for campers of various skill levels, emphasizing safety, technique, and teamwork. Materials should reflect the needs of campers aged 10-16 years old.

2. Lead On-Water Activities: Supervise and lead on-water activities, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants. Provide guidance on sailing maneuvers, boat handling, and navigation. Both onboard our fleet of pelicans and from our inboard single screw diesel powered harbor launch, Dixie, or our Boston Whaler.

3. Teach Maritime Skills: Introduce campers to fundamental maritime skills, including knot tying, navigation, and basic boat maintenance. Review and ensure that rigging is done correctly, and that the boat(s) are in safe, working condition. Inventory safety equipment daily.

4. Facilitate Team Building: Organize and oversee team-building exercises to promote cooperation, communication, and camaraderie among campers.

5. Ensure Safety: Prioritize and enforce safety protocols during all activities, including proper use of safety equipment, emergency procedures, and adherence to water safety guidelines.

6. Create Educational Materials: Develop and implement educational materials and activities that align with Spaulding Marine Center's mission to instill a passion for maritime traditions. We often partner with the Bay Model, Sea Trek, Call of the Sea, and the Sailing Science Center to create additional curriculum for our camps.

7. Promote Environmental Awareness: Incorporate lessons on environmental stewardship and the importance of preserving the marine ecosystem into the curriculum.

8. Communicate with Parents: Maintain open and regular communication with parents/guardians regarding camper progress, upcoming activities, and any concerns. The Head Instructors and Instructors will meet at the end of each day to review the day, discuss pertinent issues, and plan and prepare for the next day.

Qualifications:

1. US SAILING Instructor (min. Level I Small Boat Sailing Instructor), or have comparable certification. Previous experience as a sailing instructor or camp counselor.

2. Proficient sailing skills with a strong understanding of sailing techniques and safety protocols.

3. Certification in CPR and First Aid.

4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

5. Ability to work well with children and create a positive learning environment. Be an appropriate role model for the students and volunteer apprentice instructors.

6. Passion for maritime heritage and a commitment to fostering a love for sailing in campers.

7. Follow the course curriculum as designed. Instructors are responsible for developing the daily lesson plans for their respective classes.

8. Woodworking experience is a plus.
