Horse/Barn Help Needed
Vacancy expired!
501(c)(3) Non-profit horse rescue in Robinson needs full-time help.
Some kind of horse experience is a must because, let’s be honest, horses can be jerks. We love them all, but they can be jerks and horse people know this. We’d like to think the ones who live here are less jerky, but they all have their moments.
Exact hours and days off will vary depending on weather, staff schedules and what not but working days are usually split between morning feed time and again in the evening. Likely one weekend day is required, if not both from time to time.
We are looking for someone who doesn’t smoke (forbidden near the barn anyway, but vaping for breaks, etc. is negotiable), is drug-free and won’t drink during work hours. Ever. This is a salary position, weekly pay rate commensurate with experience. Hoping to add paid vacation and benefits to the position this year, too. Unfortunately this is generally a non-riding position, but a couple critters can still be ridden so when the weather allows some riding could happen. No guarantees.
Who we are: -20ish horses, donkeys, ponies, a miniature horse and a mini hinny all rescued from neglect, abuse, starvation, kill pen, etc. Most are retired racehorses and permanent residents, but a handful will be adoptable after rehabbing. Also a few goats (also jerks), two amazingly sweet but fiercely protective livestock guard dogs and a couple of barn cats.
What this job is (some days are much busier than others):
-feeding, watering, cleaning stalls am/pm
(Most live out in pasture in a herd environment, but that also depends on various things, so cleaning a couple of stalls a day is likely.)
-barn cleaning and sweeping, occasional laundry (on site machines)
-grooming, bathing, holding for vet and farrier
-administering medications and supplements daily
-maintain organization
-some heavy lifting (50lb. feed bags, hay bales, etc.)
We value punctuality, reliability and loyalty. These are non-negotiable qualities. We’d also like to get someone who wants to stick around a while and be on the ground floor as the rescue grows.
Being able to work as a team as well as independently is essential, too; just get the job done and done well and you’ll be left alone. You also will get hot, dirty sweaty, cold, muddy and wet depending upon seasons. We also value a sense of humor with bonus points for sarcastic wit.
This is super rewarding work, these creatures have been through so much and it’s amazing to watch them transform. It’s probably best that you live in the vicinity, we don’t offer lodging and most days are split between morning and evening duties. Does this sound like something you can and want to do? Call us/email us. Thank you.
