As a leader in children’s health, we engage in meaningful programs and partnerships throughout the region so that we can improve the lives of children beyond the walls of our hospital.OverviewThe Genetic Counselor II in the Fetal Health Center at Children's Mercy participates in the collection of information necessary to provide diagnosis and counseling for disorders in which hereditary factors may play a role. The counselor may also provide information about the risk of recurrence, prognosis, burden, and natural history of the disorder in collaboration with a clinical geneticist. Counselors may serve as educators to patient groups, lay groups, professional groups, and students, including graduate and professional school students at the university level. A Genetic Counselor II is also involved in independently creating, organizing, and leading educational and administrative activities in the Section of Medical Genetics. The distinction between Genetic Counselor I and Genetic Counselor II is that the Genetic Counselor II by virtue of achieving American Board of Genetic Counseling certification is able to work more independently and fill a more expanded role. In addition, the Genetic Counselor II has had successfully submitted an abstract to a national meeting, collaborated with others on a research project and had the opportunity to supervise the activities of learners (medical students, residents, and genetic counseling students).At Children’s Mercy, we are committed to ensuring that everyone feels welcomed within our walls. Provides quality inpatient and outpatient clinical care for patients in Clinical Genetics and fifteen subspecialty clinics (FHC, Cardio, Cleft Palate, Craniofacial, etc).

Clinical Leadership: Serves as a clinical resource for the education and consultation needs of the health care team, community care providers, student learners, family advocacy groups and peer organizations.

Utilizes evidence-based practice principles and participates in performance improvement activities.

Utilizes expertise to control costs facilitating good stewardship of fiscal resources.

Participates in scholarly activities that contribute to the body of knowledge surrounding Genetic Medicine.

Master's Degree and 5-7 years experience

Certified Genetic Counselor

MS in Genetic Counseling Required
