Job Description

Spend 2-4 hours in the afternoon, up to 5 days per week working with a bright, spirited, high functioning Down Syndrome high school student. Help him fulfill fitness/exercise goals, learn basic life skills, and get out to have interesting experiences in the community on a daily basis after school. Understand and work to achieve developmental goals set by the parents while acting as a safe and positive presence for the individual as he navigates the community. Provide feedback to parents and actively engage in identifying challenges and new areas for growth and development. Get to know the student as a person and understand what motivates him and find positive ways to engage with him to support his and parents’ goals. Provide a consistent level of discipline and set strong boundaries to maintain the level of authority needed to drive results. Encourage and foster autonomy and independence in the individual as he prepares to transition into adult life.

Desired Skills

-Training/experience as a case worker, caregiver or applied behavior analyst

-Experience working with individuals with DS and/or similar individuals with comparable disabilities

-Competency in caring for and managing individuals with some degree of cognitive impairment and developmental delay

-High school education required, college education desirable

-Access to a car on a daily basis and valid drivers license

Conditions

-2-4 hours per day, up to 5 days per week after school

-Some driving will be required, including after-school pick-ups and transfer of student to various locations and parents’ homes

-Commitment to a specific duration of employment will be preferred to avoid disruption of services
