POSITION TITLE: Pastry Cook (hourly) REPORTS TO: Executive ChefSUPERVISED BY: Pastry Chef The National Arts Club, a not-for-profit 501c3 organization, seeks an experienced pastrycook to join our team. The Club has approximately 1950 members and counts many of New York’s artistic and creative minds among its membership. The historic Clubhouse creates the quintessential New York backdrop for fine food and dining. Amenities include a beautiful oak paneled dining room and bar, art galleries, and a varied and dynamic events calendar featuring lectures, panel discussions, literary and art events, and more. The Pastry Cook, as part of a team or when working alone, serves a leader in a collaborative environment. They liaise between food and beverage staff including, but not limited to, cooks, pastry chef, dishwashers, utility workers, servers, bartenders, bussers, expeditors, and other managers while being responsible for pastry production for the restaurant, banquet events and other functions at the club. The Pastry Cook also assists with food production tasks as needed and assures that quality, sanitation and cost standards are consistently attained. QUALIFICATIONS: The individual must possess a strong work ethic and interest in maintaining a high standard in the kitchen. This candidate will be proficient in producing high quality desserts while maintaining a professional and organized work environment. The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate he/she can perform the essential functions of the position. EDUCATION OR EQUIVALENT EXPERIENCE, LICENSE & CERTIFICATIONS High school diploma or equivalent Degree or certificate from an accredited pastry program preferred 2 years of experience in pastry production NYC Food Handler’s License preferred SPECIFIC JOB KNOWLEDGE SKILL & ABILITY: High level of pastry and baking knowledge, including cooking methods, ingredients, procedures and industry best practices Demonstrated abilities in decision making, time-management, and organization with a high level of attention to detail Experience with successfully multi-tasking and delegating in a fast-paced environment ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Prep pastries and desserts as assigned by the Pastry Chef Conduct daily inventory of all prepped items Store and maintain products following proper food handling practices Maintain correct daily par of all prepped items for each dessert Communicate with the pastry chef efficiently throughout the day Contribute to new seasonal menu ideas Maintain cleanliness and organization of pastry station and walk-in Assist in other areas of the kitchen as needed PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk and talk or hear for extended periods of time. The employee is frequently required to handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move/push up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus and navigate places of public assembly with large groups of people. IMPORTANT NOTES: Due to the cyclical nature of the Club (and Hospitality) industry, employees may be required to work varying schedules to reflect the business needs of the Club. This may include weekdays, weekends, holidays, late nights, and/or early mornings. This position requires flexibility in scheduling. All employees are required to fully comply with the Club’s Employee Handbook and any future updates (furnished upon employment acceptance). Furthermore, all employees must comply with Club rules and regulations for the safe and efficient operation of Club facilities. Employees who violate Club rules and regulations will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination.
