The Benefits Specialist holds overall responsibility for approving or denying state-assigned leave of absence requests and return-to-work forms for FMLA eligibility. This role requires a deep understanding and accurate interpretation of benefits laws, including but not limited to FMLA, Paid Sick Leave Laws, ERISA, HIPAA, COBRA, and ADA. The Benefits Specialist ensures compliance with benefit laws, policies, and procedures and serves as the first point of escalation for customer service issues and resolutions. Additionally, this position responds to legal requests for file documentation associated with compliance complaints or potential lawsuits. Key Responsibilities
Determine FMLA eligibility and approve/deny leave of absence requests and return-to-work forms based on state assignments.
Ensure distribution of FMLA-required approval letters, Designation Notices, and Notice of Eligibility and Rights & Responsibility Forms according to FMLA guidelines.
Analyze medical certifications for appropriate and consistent adherence to FMLA guidelines.
Provide assistance to AutoZoners in an advocacy capacity to expedite the timely processing of disability claims and accurate benefit payments.
Audit Advice to Pay (ATP) Short Term Disability Reports from insurance carriers to ensure accurate processing of disability payments and updating of leave of absence records.
Handle compliance wage reporting for state-mandated disability benefit insurance payments.
Complete various audits, including 12-week FMLA supplemental disability and life insurance enrollments for cancellation purposes, No Hours Report, and 12 Month Leave of Absence Expiration Reports.
Perform random audits of team leave of absence data entry to ensure accuracy in the Human Capital Management (HCM) system.
Modify and develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for management.
