Teak Preservation Assistant

Primary Responsibilities:

Responsible for working with teak wood and replacing the teak deck on the ship; must possess the skills to perform, rough, and finished maintenance carpentry and maintaining, erecting, and repairing structural and decking woodwork and wooden articles; and making and repairing counters, doors, partitions, framework, etc.

Primary Duties:

1. Assists in the fabricates, assembles, installs, and/or repairs wooden furnishings in ships or boats

2. Reads blueprints to determine dimensions of furnishings in ships or boats.

3. Assists in the manufacture of shapes and laminates wood to form parts of ship, using, clamps, glue, and jigs.

4. Repairs structural woodwork and replaces defective parts and equipment, using hand tools and power tools.

5. Shapes irregular parts and trims excess material from furnishings to ensure fit meets specifications.

6. Assists in the constructs floors, doors, and partitions, using woodworking machines, hand tools, and power tools.

7. Cuts wood to specified dimensions, using hand tools and power tools.

8. Assembles and installs hardware, gaskets, floors, furnishings, or insulation, using adhesive, hand tools, and power tools.

9. Transfers dimensions or measurements of wood parts on plywood, using measuring instruments and marking devices.

Education, Experience and Skill requirements: 3 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret blue prints, general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.

Must be able to clearly communicate instructions, direct work, and provide positive leadership to subordinates. Must be able to effectively communicate to co-workers inside and outside of Engineering Department.

Current driver’s license

Working Conditions:

Potentially hazardous working environment requires considerable alertness, attention, and following established safety standards and procedures, No windows, Work environment is a battleship undergoing constant maintenance. Work involves working in hot and humid indoor and outdoor weather conditions during the hottest part of the day. Use of equipment may involve loud noise.

Schedule:

FT- 40 hours per week, 5:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday – Friday, may include holidays. Able to work evenings as needed.

Physical Requirements:

Over 2/3 of the time is spent using hands, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and talking or hearing. 1/3 to 2/3 of the time is spent standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling. Close vision, distance vision, ability to identify and distinguish colors, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus is also necessary for the safety of the individual, employees and guests. The Teak Preservation Assistant must be able to lift/manipulate hatches, stoop under low lying doorways, transport and utilize equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
