Land Survey Party Chief- The ideal candidate will have 2+ years of construction layout experience with the ability to read and interpret construction drawings, and be able to work as a one-person crew using GPS and robotic instruments.
D.W. Hirst & Assoc., Inc., Professional Surveyors; Mappers, is currently seeking an experienced Survey Party Chief. This is a full-time land surveying position performing Survey Crew Chief duties for Commercial and Residential Construction, including but not limited to: construction staking, as-builts, boundary, topographic, ALTA/ASCM land title, and lot surveys.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following (other duties may be assigned):
Performs field work related to all types of surveys, including boundary surveys, as-builts, construction layout, topographic mapping, ALTA/ASCM land title
Thorough understanding and working knowledge of the total station, robotic total station, data collection equipment, levels, and GPS survey equipment
Makes value judgments and assessments in accordance with sound land surveying principles
Reads and understands survey map data and construction plans
Performs mathematical calculations and technical duties with minimal supervision
Checks, verifies, and establishes land lines, survey control points, and elevation grades
Takes accurate and legible survey notes and performs simple note reduction and checking
Responsible for precision and accuracy of survey notations provided either in field books or electronic format
Troubleshoots survey equipment problems and takes corrective action in the field
Responsible for training Survey Crew in mapping methods, equipment use, and field safety along with reporting daily work, equipment maintenance, vehicle maintenance, and driving logs
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described here include, but are not limited to:
Lifting minimum of 40 pounds
Walk 2 miles or more daily
Traverse obstacles, creeks, fences, etc.
Use hand tools including machetes, shovels, manhole hook, etc.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Preferably Five (5) years of experience running a survey crew, collecting survey information in the field, and performing field computations, which includes a minimum of two years of experience as an Instrument Man operating robotic total station, level, and GPS required. Must be reliable, dependable, and be able to follow directions. High school diploma or equivalent required.
CST Certification is a plus

Demonstrated ability to identify sources of measurement error
Attendance, punctuality and reliability are essential requirements
Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy
Must be able to work in inclement weather
Capable of operating as a one or two-man crew
Strong work ethic and team-player attitude
Ability to perform physical labor (i.e., strenuous walking, and lifting grates/manhole covers, hauling equipment) and physically maneuver around construction sites, including accessing excavations, trenches, structures and other disturbed areas
