The Director of Nursing administers the nursing program in a hospital or other medical facility to maintain standards of patient care. Moreover, the incumbent advises medical staff, department heads, and administrators in matters related to nursing services.

Directs, oversees, and evaluates all nursing personnel and staff.

Coordinates the activities of the department and guides staffing procedures.

Sets objectives and long-term goals for the nursing department. Interprets policies and objectives of nursing service to staff and community groups.

Recommends establishment or revisions of policies, and develops organizational structure and standards of performance for legal compliance and high quality standards.

Controls budgets and monitors expenditures.

Ensures that nurses are current in competencies, assessments, licensures, certifications, and annual training.

Collaborates with other departments and professionals to streamline operations.

Relies on extensive experience and judgement to plan and accomplish goals. Reports to upper management.

Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures.

Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.

Graduate from an accredited school of nursing, Bachelor’s degree (BSN).

Certification and Licensing:

Valid Florida Registered Nurse License, ACLS, BLS certification from the American Heart Association required.

Experience:

Minimum 5 years of relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships

Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form

Knowledge of business and management principles

Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of others.

Ability to lead, motivate, develop and train others.
