Maintenance Mechanic I/II
Mt Baker Products is a premier manufacturer of decorative plywood used for cabinetry, furniture, and interiors throughout North America. Our company uses veneers like cherry, walnut, and oak to produce high-end panels for the woodworking industry. We are now hiring a full-time Maintenance Mechanic (I or II) in our Bellingham mill. This role will be responsible for supporting the Maintenance Department in keeping the physical plan functioning to meet production needs.
About this Position:
Summary: Under supervision and direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, this role will be responsible for supporting the Maintenance Department in keeping the physical plan functioning to meet production needs.
Schedule: Regular hours will be 6:30 am to 3:00 pm, five consecutive days a week; workdays will be assigned at time of hire. Potential overtime may occur outside of regular hours and workdays.
Starting Pay: $26.00 to $30.00.00 /hour, depending on qualifications and skill level.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Notifies Maintenance Supervisor/Department Supervisor of any malfunctions, repairs, and other mechanical concerns, to include fire prevention; fuel handling; press lines; spreader lines; glue lines; saw lines; patch lines; and sander machine.
2. Makes repairs and performs maintenance duties, as assigned per job level (I or II), including clean-up and minor electrical and welding tasks, using a table saw, hand and power tools.
3. Reports any downtime immediately to Department Supervisor/Maintenance Supervisor. Obtains prior authorization before making any repairs and adjustments.
4. Inspects equipment and machinery for safety issues; escalates concerns to management, as appropriate.
5. Works cooperatively on a team.
6. Promotes and demonstrates safe work habits, including Lock-Out Tag-Out; wears assigned PPE, including safety glasses, earplugs, gloves and dust mask, appropriate to the task.
7. Other duties, as assigned.
Qualifications/Skills Needed:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the following qualifications and demonstrated skills:
1. Minimum of one year working in a mechanic-oriented position; manufacturing plant (production; material handling) is strongly preferred. Professional training courses related to building and/or machinery maintenance is desirable.
2. Ability to successfully complete forklift and bobcat training for certification.
3. Preferred, but not required: Proficient in the basics of MS Office products (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook); prior experience in using maintenance project tracking software is a plus.
4. Ability to read and understand basic blueprints, instructions, parts/safety manuals, directions, policies and bulletins.
5. Ability to perform basic math functions in all units of measure, using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
6. Ability to identify safety concerns on equipment and machinery to appropriately escalate matters to management; ability to follow all standard work procedures in a safe manner and promote the use of PPE.
7. Ability to take supervisory direction and work cooperatively with co-workers in and across departments.
8. Ability to be flexible in work performed and scheduled; ability to work non-standard hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
The employee will be working near dust, fumes, loud machinery, and mechanical equipment. The work environment may vary from cold to hot, depending on the season. The employee will be walking standing and engaging in movement throughout the day, occasionally to frequently required to lift items weighing up to 50 lbs. Due to the variety of job duties, physical activities may include bending, lifting, stooping, turning, twisting, pushing, pulling, raising arms above shoulders and head, standing and walking for long periods, climbing ladders, working in enclosed spaces and operating forklifts or bobcats. The employee will be required to wear PPE appropriate to the task.
