PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Impel is currently seeking a part-time co-facilitator to assist in teaching a restorative justice,

educational program for Arlington middle and high school students to help them avoid using alcohol, drugs, and certain other illegal substances. Students can be referred by Arlington County

Public Schools (APS), the Arlington County Juvenile Court system, a parent or guardian of a youth 18 or younger, or as a self-referral.

Students learn how substance use affects their physical and mental health, are introduced to scientific research on alcohol and drug use, participate in a variety of experiential exercises, hear from guest speakers, and explore alternative behavior and other activities to help them better understand the consequences related to using substances. The parental component focuses on helping parents/ guardians recognize signs of drug or alcohol use, identify resources in the community, and

learn strategies to support their teens. A booster session with the student and parent together are generally held 4 weeks after the student session.

QUALIFICATIONS

Looking for a qualified candidate to co-facilitate and deliver the Second Chance program. A substance use prevention and early intervention program for Arlington youth in middle school and high school

The ideal candidate will be bilingual English/Spanish to be able to present the curriculum to limited or non-English speaking students and parents/guardians.

A “well-qualified” instructor will possess the following skills and qualifications:

Current working knowledge about substance abuse prevention, including the physical and mental health effects on youth

and best practices for helping youth avoid substance abuse.

Recent experience working with and/or teaching middle and high school students.

Recent experience working directly in and/or with schools (counselors, administrators, social workers, substance abuse

counselors, etc.) to reach and serve middle and high school students.

Recent training and experience working with and teaching culturally and ethnically diverse

adults and young people.

Recent experience working specifically with parents of teens.

Practical knowledge of effective classroom management.

Willingness to keep current on the latest trends on teen substance use and abuse.

Willingness to ask questions, accept feedback, and be held accountable.

Excellent organization and written and oral communication skills.

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to defuse difficult situations as they arise.

Can work successfully in a team environment

Must be reliable and dependable

Minimum of a Bachelors degree, preferred CSAC, or National Certification or Masters Degree from an accredited college

or university in substance abuse, psychology, sociology, social work, rehabilitation, criminal justice or closely related

areas

DUTIES

Conduct and co-facilitate the 17 scheduled Second Chance sessions, which include:

o The student sessions (3 days for high schools and 2 days for middle schools and Spanish sessions)

Additional sessions only after consulting with the Program Director.

Serve as a point of contact for Second Chance with referral sources

(school staff and court personnel), parents, teens, and, where needed, the

community at large. This includes maintaining regular communication with the

referral sources, guest speakers, and school substance abuse counselors; responding

to parent questions and concerns; assisting referral sources with arranging

transportation when needed; reaching out to the Program Deputy Director for assistance in ensuring that all administrative

aspects of the program are addressed in a timely manner.

Greet parents before the start of the sessions and remind parents that phones will be placed in a basket during class time

and returned to the students at the end of the day. Provide your phone number in case of an emergency and a parent needs

to contact their student.

Consult with the Program Deputy Director about any reschedule conflicts well in advance.

Administer the Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory (SASSI) to students

Distribute and collect the student evaluations.

Meet periodically with the Second Chance Program Director and sub-group of the Arlington Foundation for Families and

Youth.

Meet with School Substance Abuse Counselors as needed.

PROGRAM SCHEDULE

Note: High School sessions are 3 days from 8:30am-3pm; Middle School and Spanish sessions are 2 days from 8am-2:30pm. All student sessions are held in Room 171 at the Syphax Education Center. Facilitators are expected to arrive 30 minutes before the sessions.
