From Junior Tech to Business Owner!
Eight years ago, a young, talented, and ambitious tech named Brian arrived for an interview. Seeing his potential and our future in him, I asked, where do you see yourself in five years? Helping us manage our company or going into your own business one day?
He fidgeted in his seat and sheepishly said that he did have a dream of owning his own business one day but didn’t want it to be a problem. So, with that, I reached across the desk to shake his hand, while stating “Successful people don’t get in the way of others success, that in fact you help them, by joining them in their dreams, if you do a great job here and help me with my goals, I will join in helping you achieve your goals.”
After a year of proving himself, we enrolled Brian in the states master plumber’s apprenticeship program and arranged to have him out of work on-time once a week to support his need to attend classes (At times, turning work away to make this happen for him). Brian’s a great employee, cross training and learning all that he could about how best to serve our customers. Brian thrives, always operating in integrity, making us and himself plenty of money, but without sacrificing his personal life (At Good Tidings we have NO On-Call).
Next, we would further pour into Brian’s career by flying him out of state to HVAC sales school, so he could learn how to best offer up repair AND replacement options to our customers. We have found that having honest Techs, offer up repair and replacement options vs turning over a lead to a “Comfort Advisor” is the best way NOT to take advantage or manipulate a customer. With this approach, we take the commission dollars that would normally go to a “sales guy” and funnel them back to the tech.
Since we started this way of doing business, Brian and many others have greatly benefited with the extra money they earn. Many have bought houses, started families and in most cases, support their wives, now stay-at-home moms.
Brian studied really hard and passed the test, becoming a Master Plumber in 2023. So, in an effort to help launch Brian’s company, we customized a plan of working a four-day work week, so in the off, days Brian could start serving his own customers (His territory is up north and not in conflict with our non-compete agreement).
In 2024, to further support Brian, we dropped down his shift to three days a week. Amazingly, Brian generates income for Good Tidings and himself in three days, what he used to have to work five or more days to accomplish. He’s that good and we and our customers respect and love him for it!

This “Story” is not unique to Brian. We have many top performing techs here at Good Tidings taking advantage of all we have to offer. Others have also gone in to their own business’s while some choose to stay and help run ours. For example, one of our “Rock Stars” has been here for over fifteen years and has both Plumbing and HVAC licenses, he runs calls while training our apprentices. Another amazing fact is, three of our top Techs live over an hour’s drive away, driving past many other shops so they can receive the best money, team to work with and outcomes for their lives. Reality check
