PORTNOLA is seeking a Port Facility Maintenance Master Mechanic for the Maintenance Division. Starting salary depends upon qualifications: $24.10/hr. to $33.74/hr. THIS VACANCY QUALIFIES FOR $1.50/hr. PREMIUM PAY Premium pay is additional pay provided to employees for each hour actually worked. May be required to possess a valid Louisiana driver's license or commercial driver's license. NOTE: A combination of experience in the various fields will be accepted. Examples of repair of mobile equipment include auto mechanic, Mobile Equipment Maintenance Mechanic, Mobile Equipment Overhaul Mechanic and Mobile Equipment Master Mechanic. Job ConceptsFunction of Work:To maintain, repair, and overhaul heavy mobile equipment or complex mechanical systems on mobile equipment used in the maintenance of a port facility.Level of Work:Advanced.Supervision Received:Direct from Port Facility Maintenance Foreman.Supervision Exercised:May oversee work of co-workers assigned to assist on specific tasks.Location of Work:May be used by all Port Authorities.Job Distinctions:Differs from Port Facility Maintenance Specialists by the responsibility of performing maintenance and repairs on all machinery within the Maintenance Department.Differs form Port Facility Maintenance Foreman by the absence of full supervisory responsibilities over subordinates or over the operation of port facility maintenance operations.Examples of WorkPort Facility Maintenance Master Mechanic (Maintenance) This position is in the Facility Services department of the Port of New Orleans Maintenance Division and reports directly to the Port Facility Maintenance Foreman. This position serves as a Master Mechanic by performing the following tasks to include but not limited to: Repairs and maintains vehicles, machinery and equipment. This position participates in the required PORT training program and obtains additional training in order to facilitate the efficient performance duties and/or required tasks. This is a safety sensitive position that requires random drug screening throughout the year. The incumbent is required to possess and maintain a valid Louisiana’s Driver’s License, Class E, or other state equivalent, and be knowledgeable and capable of the safe operation of various types of equipment required to fulfill the needs of the position and the PORT. The incumbent is required to have knowledge of the use of a UHF radio , which requires proper radio etiquette. The incumbent shall utilize a telephone, cellphone, two-way communication device, computer and email to facilitate communications if required. The incumbent must be able to perform duties many times without direct supervision and be knowledgeable enough to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent may be required to work overtime and may require working immediately before, after or during a disaster. 85% EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR Observes mechanical devices in operation and listens to their sounds to locate causes of trouble. Dismantles devices to gain access to and remove or replace defective parts. Examines form and texture of parts to detect imperfections. Inspects used parts to determine changes in dimensional requirements. Adjusts functional parts of devices and control instruments. Repairs or replaces defective parts. Installs special functional and structural parts in devices. Lubricates and cleans parts. Starts devices to test their performance. Repairs electrical equipment and performs maintenance on gas, diesel and propane engines, air conditioning/HVAC systems, and uses vehicle scan tools/PC systems for fleet vehicles and diesel generators. Additionally, handles maintenance on all grass cutting equipment, such as weed eaters, chain saws, lawn mowers, billy goats, blowers, compressors, small water pumps, generators, bobcats, bulldozers, and more. Jump starts any equipment that fails to start and determines the nature and extent of necessary repairs, selecting the best work procedure for repair. Fits and installs parts such as hydraulic hoses, pistons, valves, bearings, gears, and cylinders to appropriate tolerances. Maintains a clean and safe working environment. 10% GENERAL DUTIES Orders and purchases parts. Change tires on all equipment, as necessary. Sends out for repairs/replacement. Maintains logs on all equipment of repairs and preventative maintenance performed. Works as directed. 5% OTHER DUTIES, INCLUDING EMERGENCY SUPPORT The incumbent is required to perform a variety of tasks and assignments, as directed by the Supervisor, necessary to fulfill the mission of the Facility Services Department and/or Port Maintenance Division.
