This position requires a valid Class E driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Drivers Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:
three (3) or more moving violations in the past 3 years that accumulate 3 or more points per violation;
any 2 convictions of reckless driving in the past 3 years;
a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past 3 years; and

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Ensure safe and efficient traffic control of the State Highway System during maintenance, incidents, special events and construction activities. Conduct field reviews to ensure the Maintenance of Traffic is being carried out in accordance with plans and specifications. Establishes periodic inspections (day and night) of Maintenance of Traffic (M.O.T.) operations on maintenance, incidents, special events and construction projects during critical times such as initial work and phase changes. Responsible for the implementation of the necessary revisions to rectify or shut down these operations if they are deemed unsafe or unauthorized.
Review design plans during phase submittals for M.O.T. features and issues. Assist personnel in developing M.O.T. concepts including level planning.
Establish and implement a process to mainstream the use of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) technology into field traffic control. This will require the coordination of activities of multiple offices including Construction and Design.
Manage Construction Contract work orders for the unit. Arrange M.O.T. training for the unit.
Assist Construction and Construction Engineering Inspection staff with M.O.T. issues, phase changes and evaluating M.O.T. alternatives proposed by contractors.
Act as Traffic Operations representative at all pre-construction meetings, semi-final and final inspection of construction projects.
Investigate and respond to requests from public agencies, private organizations and individuals concerning various traffic engineering and traffic operations issues.
Review M.O.T. plans for permit work and special events. Assist District Public Information Office with news releases as they relate to roadway closures, detour routes, etc.
Respond to and document major freeway incidents and accidents that occur within construction work zones.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A high school diploma and five years of engineering, traffic studies, or traffic safety experience; or An associate of arts or science degree in computer science, engineering technology, or similar relevant area of study and three years of engineering, traffic studies, or traffic safety experience; or A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in engineering, computer science, engineering technology or similar relevant area of study and one year of engineering, traffic studies, or traffic safety experience; or Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam and has an Engineer in Trainee (EIT) certification in either Florida or another State; or An active International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Signs and Pavement Marking certification.
