Finisher (Cabinetry and Millwork)
Summary of responsibilities
- Responsible for achieving high-quality finishes on cabinets and other wood components.
- Applies advanced finishing techniques based on project specifications.
- Mixes and maintains finishing materials, ensuring safe handling practices.
- Stays updated on environmentally friendly finishing products and best practices.
- May participate in final installations for on-site touch-ups or finishing.
- May assist with finishing and especially installation tasks as needed, gaining a broader understanding of the entire process. This is a hybrid position and finishing is the focus but doesn’t entirely encompass.
The Finishing Specialist at Haskel Sears Design plays a crucial role in bringing custom millwork to life by applying beautiful and durable finishes. This role requires a combination of technical expertise, artistic flair, and a commitment to achieving exceptional results.
Responsibilities:
- Finishing Techniques:
- Reads and interprets shop drawings and finishing specifications to determine the appropriate finishing materials and application methods for each millwork component.
- Prepares surfaces for finishing by sanding, cleaning, and addressing any imperfections.
- Mixes and applies a variety of finishing materials (stains, paints, lacquers, etc.) following industry best practices and safety protocols.
- Achieves consistent color and finish quality across all components for a cohesive aesthetic.
- May experiment with and develop new finishing techniques to enhance the visual appeal of millwork pieces (depending on experience level).
- Quality Control:
- Conducts thorough quality checks throughout the finishing process, inspecting surfaces for blemishes, inconsistencies, or imperfections.
- Troubleshoots any finishing issues and implements corrective actions to ensure a flawless final product.
- Maintains detailed records of finishing materials used and techniques applied for each project for future reference.
- Environmental Considerations:
- Stays updated on environmentally friendly finishing products and practices, minimizing the use of harmful solvents or chemicals whenever possible.
- Implements proper disposal procedures for finishing materials and waste according to environmental regulations.
- Teamwork and Learning:
- Works collaboratively with other finishing specialists and fabricators to ensure a smooth workflow and efficient completion of projects.
- Coordinates with the Shop Production Manager and the Project Manager to ensure finishes are to specification.
- Participates in training programs to develop new skills and stay updated on the latest advancements in finishing materials and techniques.
Qualifications:
- 1-2 years experience in woodworking including some finishing experience.
- Strong understanding of various finishing materials, their properties, and proper application techniques.
- Excellent attention to detail and a keen eye for color and aesthetics.
- Ability to follow instructions precisely and work independently while adhering to safety protocols.
- Experience with proper ventilation and personal protective equipment usage in a finishing environment.
- A commitment to environmental responsibility and a willingness to learn sustainable finishing practices.
