Software Development Engineer, AWS Industry Products - Science for Industry
Virginia, Arlington , 22201 Arlington USA

DescriptionAs part of the AWS Solutions organization, we have a vision to provide business applications, leveraging Amazon’s unique experience and expertise, that are used by millions of companies worldwide to manage day-to-day operations. We will accomplish this by accelerating our customers’ businesses through delivery of intuitive and differentiated technology solutions that solve enduring business challenges. We blend vision with curiosity and Amazon’s real-world experience to build opinionated, turnkey solutions. Where customers prefer to buy over build, we become their trusted partner with solutions that are no-brainers to buy and easy to use.Software Development Engineers on the Science for Industry team build science-based features and products for customers in industry segments such as manufacturing, clean energy, healthcare and life sciences, media, telecom, and operations. You will work hand-in-hand with research and applied scientists to prototype and build functionality that supports one or multiple segments.Key job responsibilitiesA Software Dev Engineer II (SDE II) on the Science for Industry (SCIFI) team collaborates with industry teams to design and integrate science-embedded components that fit customer needs. Given requirements for a new feature, a SDE II will work with product managers, designers, and scientists to clarify, prototype, design, and implement new features. They communicate the value of a science feature, as well as the underlying risks. To accommodate the breadth of industry teams, a SDE II may work solo with the segment team or with other SDEs to deliver cutting-edge features. They will become the subject matter expert on the science that enables these features. In addition to being able to demonstrate the flexibility to develop software following the traditional software lifecycle, a SDE II prototypes and validates science like a lean startup. A SDE II will solve for competing constraints in deploying science features. This can range from data access to hardware constraints. They do this by stating assumptions clearly, applying the scientific method in their problem solving, and adjusting scope for the science work to de-risk project deliverables. For each phase of development, an SDE II will jump between languages. As a polyglot, they will learn the best practices for each language to deliver on time. An engineer will provide a consistent high bar for code produced by both scientists and engineers on the team. Even with novel science embedded, the features deployed will delight industry teams by maximizing value and minimizing maintenance cost. A SDE II will interact with industry teams to create and advocate operational excellence standards for science features. This potentially requires educating industry team engineers on how the science feature is constructed, tested, and operated. They will innovate ways to improve the collaboration between scientists and engineers, and how to test hypotheses and convert successful ones into product features. The SDE II understands the scientific mindset and process, enabling seamless communication between scientists and engineers on the team. They are able to help new teammates or interns learn specific team processes which have arisen to satisfy the needs of science-based features being developed for industrial settings.A day in the lifeA software development engineer on the SCIFI team will spend time learning about cutting-edge AI technology applicable to industry segments we work with, understanding customer problems and refining ideas with product managers, designing and running experiments with research and applied scientists, analyzing and communicating results, designing systems to scale scientific solutions, and implementing those features. Internal stakeholders are AWS Industry Products teams that work with leading external customers in their respective industries. The problems this role will aim to solve span the fields of computer vision, natural language, optimization, and machine learning.About the teamThe AWS Industry Products (AIP) organization is chartered to build industry-specific managed products by diving deep with industry innovation leaders to solve the disruptive digital challenges changing their industries.
