Mental Health Peer Job Coach
Community Education Specialist - Part Time
Job Description: This is a 15-hour, 3-days per week mental health “peer” position. Our peers have “lived experience” with mental health and they feel comfortable working with individuals with chronic mental illness often complicated by persistent homelessness, substance abuse, chronic medical problems and criminal justice involvement. Our peers provide on-the-job training and at ZSFG in a variety of hospital-based services and small businesses that include: coffee and hot dog carts, sewing, administrative assistant training and our clothing and book donation program.
Required Qualifications
This position is intended as a mental health peer position. Hiring preference will be an individual with personal experiences as a consumer of mental health services. PLEASE RESPOND TO THIS PREFERENCE IN YOUR COVER LETTER.
Coursework or work experience in related area.
Continuing education in related field required.
An understanding of mental health issues and sensitivity toward mental health clients.
Basic effective reading, verbal, written communications and presentation skills to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Good problem solving skills
Good reading, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, and good presentation skills.
Ability to maintain positive interactions with others and work cooperatively.
Ability to work as part of a team, to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and work independently in a high pressure environment;
Ability to work with clients and program staff from diverse cultural and social class backgrounds.
Demonstrated excellent attendance and reliability.
Preferred Qualifications
One year of verifiable experience within the last five years working with a culturally diverse population performing a combination of the following range of duties: data entry experience, providing information, education, intervention and/or referral services, assisting staff in the assessment process and providing input into the development of treatment plans, conducting interviews, and participation in health promotion and health education outreach activities.
