Position Title: Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)

Reports To: Technical Supervisor

Position Overview:

The MLT is responsible for specimen processing and adhering to specimen processing procedures. Specimen processing includes ensuring each specimen is sealed, labeled, packaged correctly, and matches the requisition before inputting the information into the laboratory information system. In addition, the MLT is responsible for testing various sample types such as human blood and urine on various laboratory equipment. The MLT is also responsible for preparing samples for analysis, preparing reagents, and maintaining a clean and orderly laboratory.

Required Qualifications (Work Experience and/or Education):

Position Requirements:

Bachelors of Science or Bachelors of Art degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology or in the chemical or biological sciences.

Desired Qualifications (Work Experience and/or Education):

Ability to work independently with little supervision.

Ability to complete daily tasks accurately due to laboratory compliance.

Strong work ethic, detail oriented, punctual, organized, personable, reliable and dependable.

One to two years working in a laboratory environment preferred.

Experience working with Beckman Coulter chemistry instruments and/ or Sysmex hematology instruments.

Experience working with LIMS, MS Word, and MS Excel.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Performs moderate complex analytic processes under direct supervision. Uses routine and

specialized automated and non-automated laboratory procedures and/or techniques for which he/she is qualified, trained, and demonstrates competency according to established lab section operating procedures.

Follow CLIA, COLA, and HIPAA guidelines and standard operating procedures.

Adhere to all HIPAA confidentiality requirements and complete all training.

Adhere to Compliance and Code of Ethics and complete all training.

Operates laboratory instruments and ensures proper functioning of laboratory equipment.

Completes required maintenance activities on equipment, recognizes and elevates potential issues to the team members responsible.

Maintains records and documentation of maintenance.

Calibrates laboratory instruments to ensure accuracy of test results. Performs quality control procedures as specified and maintains quality control records and documentation necessary to meet the standards of accrediting agencies.

Understands proper specimen collection, handling and transport procedures.

Prepares specimens for analysis and determines acceptability of samples within guidelines.

Verifies accuracy, and enters data in the laboratory computer system, along with appropriate explanatory or interpretive information. Meets all section turn-around times.

Validates acceptability of test results by review of quality control and all other test parameters.

Performs internal and external proficiency testing. Handles proficiency testing samples in the same manner as patient samples.

Maintains clean and orderly work area. Cleans bench surfaces and equipment each shift or after contamination or spill.

Meets work product output expectations.

Understands, maintains and enforces safety guidelines.

Discards outdated reagents according to section policy.

Performs inventory counts as requested.

Maintains open and effective communication with personnel in work team, and with members of other teams throughout the laboratory.

Demonstrates willingness to cooperate with team members and with cross-functional groups in the laboratory to accomplish timely and accurate testing.

Demonstrates professional demeanor, in personal appearance and behavior, in all work-related interactions inside and outside of the laboratory.

Demonstrate adaptability by embracing changes in the laboratory with a positive attitude.

Physical Requirements:

Light to moderate physical effort (lift/carry up to 35 Ibs.) Heavier weights with assistance

Standing for long periods of time

Repetitive motions and/or prolonged computer use

Working at a fast pace, subject to many interruptions and both physical and mental stress

Wear provided appropriate personal protective equipment to include lab coat, gloves and face shield.

Air-conditioned laboratory environment

Exposure to some odorous chemicals and specimens
