Collecting and organizing patient data: Health information specialists gather, analyze, and index patient care documentation. They also enter data into digital health systems

Maintaining records: They ensure that medical records comply with all relevant medical, administrative, legal, ethical, and regulatory requirements

Correcting records: If there are any errors, they may request chart corrections or request missing information from healthcare providers

Record Retrieval and Distribution: Process and fulfill requests for health information from authorized personnel, patients, or external agencies in accordance with laws and organizational policies

Problem Solving: Identify and resolve issues related to health information, including discrepancies in medical records

Confidentiality: Uphold patient confidentiality and secure sensitive health information against unauthorized access

Ensure Compliance: Adhere to all healthcare regulations and laws, including HIPAA, regarding patient privacy and data security

Collaboration: They may work with clinicians, staff, vendors, and patients

Training and assisting staff: They may train new staff members and assist with basic auditing. Acts as a resource to drive the identification of the skills, duration and effort required for successful problem solving

High School Diploma/ GED (or higher) OR 1+ year experience in Health information management

1+ year experience in health information management, medical records, or healthcare administration

1+ year experience with EHR systems and data entry software

1+ year working with healthcare regulations, medical terminology, and clinical workflows

Soft Skills:

Attention to Detail: High degree of accuracy and thoroughness in managing patient health information

Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills for collaborating with healthcare staff, patients, and external entities

Confidentiality and Integrity: Ability to handle sensitive health information with a strong commitment to maintaining confidentiality and security
