Winter Holiday Camp Assistant Director and Activity Instructor
[Job Summary]
As an Innovation for Youth camp Assistant Camp Director and Activity Instructor you will teach or assist with teaching fun hands-on activities as well as being in a leadership role for camp operations at our Thanksgiving Week day camp program and/or a magic and circus arts camp in early January. This is a seasonal-short term camp leadership position making it ideal for a college or high school student who is looking for a full day short term employment position for the week of Thanksgiving and/or early January.
We are hiring for our enrichment camps for the dates of:
Nov 25, 26, 26 - Turkey Tech and Tinker Theme (STEM Activities themed around Thanksgiving)
Jan 2, 3 - Magic and Circus Art Camp
These camps are being held at Greenmeadow Community Center and Pool in Palo Alto, CA.
College and High school Juniors and Seniors with leadership experience are encouraged to apply for this position.
As an enrichment camp lead, your role is to lead and help kids do their projects, to help maintain a positive instructional and recreation environment and to do a wide variety of “housekeeping” tasks that make our camps go well . While prior formal teaching experience is not required, you would be a good fit for this job if you have a passion for leading creative hands-on activities and you have solid leadership experience either on the job or in your extracurricular experiences.
We are accepting applications right now for these camps. You do not need to have availability for all the weeks we are offering camps, as we are open to hire different staff leaders depending on availability, interests and skills. .

Would you enjoy helping kids do fun and creative activities? We are planning craft, cooking and creative, Thanksgiving themed technology projects for our Thanksgiving week Turkey, Tech and Tinker Camp. Our magic and circus arts camp features learning beginning magic tricks and some juggling, balloon sculpting and clowning skills as well.
Are you a fast-learner, enthusiastic, energetic and have good communication skills?
Would you be good at helping to attend to the work and details that go into implementing a successful and fun recreational enrichment camp?

At Innovation for Youth, we offer camps that are designed to be wonderful learning environments for young people. We believe in creating a caring community of learners. We are learning all the time along with our campers. We also make it a point to personally reflect on our camp practices so that we can improve as camp counselors. We believe that camp counselors are very important in young people’s lives in the role of informal educators. Our hope is that by offering a well resourced camp implemented by caring and talented staff that we can help our campers nurture their passion for learning and ultimately have their skills they learn at camp be a foundation for their future occupations and hobbies.
[What do Innovation for Youth Camp Counselors Do?]
[Essential Duties and Responsibilities]
Teach and assist with innovation camp activities from our curriculum
Setup and pack-up of materials
Preparation of materials for lessons
Learning the curriculum we teach and helping develop the Innovation for Youth curriculum and lesson implementation plans.
Maintain a positive camp environment by offering the right balance of structure and fun. Part of creating a great camp is implementing positive limit setting and developing solutions with campers and other staff when behavior becomes unsafe, disruptive or inappropriate.
Helping to maintain a positive relationship with our site hosts by keeping the site in a clean and orderly state and communicating well with our site hosts for across team collaboration and taking good care of the facilities
Assistant Camp Directors are the person in charge when the Camp director is not on site, so you should be prepared to handle the various responsibilities that can come up including:
Assigning tasks and providing ongoing leadership support to staff and counselors in training.
Being a role model of positive leadership to our campers.
Coordinating and participating in setup and end-of day closing procedures.
Communicating with parents
Being willing and able to administer first aid. This is mostly giving out band-aids, but you should be prepared to handle some common and more serious first aid situations if they come up.
Seeing to it that our camp is a good “guest” to our site hosts by following their behavior guidelines, taking care of their facilities, keeping their management team informed of any issues that come up.
Collaborating with the camp director and following their lead for implementing the details of a positive camp experience.
[Education and Experience]
High school or college student
17 and above and a work permit from the school district if still a high school student.
Childcare or recreational activity leadership experience is a plus.
[Skills]
Excellent communication skills
Ability to quickly learn an activity and be able to deliver it confidently and professionally.
Content aptitude or experience with the camp themes weeks that you are applying is desired.
[Other Requirements]-
Be dependable, prompt and detail oriented.
Be able to lift 20 - 40 lbs. (Note: We are willing to make reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities as long as they are able to perform most of the other essential functions of the job).
Be willing to prepare, set-up and cleanup from hands-on lessons that use a wide variety of materials.
Be willing to go through necessary background checks, finger-printing,and work eligibility as required by law, by us and/or by our site hosts.
[Compensation]
We want our instructors to feel well compensated and rewarded for working with our students. We compensate at $18.80-$25/hour depending on experience and qualifications met for this position.
