Materials & Process Engineer
Job DescriptionBAE Systems is seeking a Materials and Process Engineer.Responsibilities Include:
Working in a team environment along with other technical disciplines to identify and specify the appropriate materials, processes and coatings for metallic materials used on Weapon Systems and Combat Vehicles.
Located in the engineering facility, you will primarily be working with development of new systems and support of Legacy systems.
Working with other engineering disciplines to review design drawings and ensure that appropriate materials, coatings, processes, and corrosion protection coatings are specified.
Selecting the appropriate materials considering cost, availability, producibility, and other factors that may impact the manufacturability of the component or system.
Applying principles of chemistry, physics and material behavior to develop metallic materials and coating process specifications, and fabrication and joining processes that will meet the mechanical load and life cycle requirements of the system.
Applying material property design allowable and specification requirements to the stress analysis of system components.
Working with the metallurgical laboratory technicians to perform failure analyses of parts returned from testing or the field using metallurgical techniques such as macroscopic examination, documentation, metallographic techniques, scanning electron microscopy and mechanical testing determine the root cause of failure.
Supporting our production facilities with root cause investigations, vendor support, and first article inspection.
Required Education, Experience, & Skills
High School Diploma with 2 years of Metallurgical/Materials Testing Experience
Familiarity with engineering drawings as well as computer aided design programs.
Knowledge of and demonstrated experience with both ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
Good oral and written English communication skills.
Ability to read and comprehend engineering drawings.
Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with customers to solve technical problems.
Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills
BS Degree in Material Science, Metallurgical Engineering, or similar degree with relevant experience.
Experience in heavy industry or military hardware, large scale forgings and weldment, Gear materials and processing (heat treatment), and fatigue and fracture toughness.
Experience in a materials lab including but not limited to:
Metallographic Sample preparation and analysis
Fractography/Failure analysis
Hardness/Microhardness testing
Scanning Electron Microscopy
Optical Microscopy
Mechanical testing including fatigue, fracture toughness, and tensile/compression testing
Materials selection experience in developing complex systems
Experience writing material and process specifications
Technical report writing and oral presentation skills
Heat treatment processes
Knowledge of material manufacturing and forming processes including castings, forgings, additive, and subtractive machining
Knowledge of corrosion mechanisms and application of corrosion protection
Pay InformationFull-Time Salary Range: $68700 - $116800Please note: This range is based on our market pay structures.
