The Registered Nurse Preceptor bridges the gap between the classroom and the clinical area while still fulfilling the registered nurse's duties.A caregiver in this position works 7:00am - 7:30pm.A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Prepare newly employed nurses by role modeling, demonstrating nursing actions, and giving timely and appropriate feedback to the nurse.
Assess the learning needs of the orientee and helps to determine goals.
Functions as a role model for orientees and unit personnel.
Reinforce content provided in classroom orientation.
Assist charge nurse/team leader in assigning patients and in planning care for those patients.
Serve as a resource person to orientees and other staff.
Assist educator/manager with planning and presenting educational programs for orientees and other staff.
Participate in at least two hospital committees.
Introduce new staff to the physical layout of the unit, to personnel on the unit, and to personnel related to the unit.
Meet with charge nurse/educator as needed to discuss orientation program and orientee progress.
Participate in unit-practice councils.
Assist orientees in organizing a daily routine and setting priorities, write objectives and plans for unit orientation.
Use evaluation tools to measure the progress of orienting staff to meet unit standards.
Keep anecdotal records on orientee/staff clinical performance to validate progress in orientation and job performance.
Assist orientees in developing clinical skills necessary to meet standards of care.
Orients new employees to evenings and/or nights by rotating, as necessary.
Orient staff to new products, systems, and policies.
Ensure that staff maintains required competencies and notify charge nurse or division director if this does not occur.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Graduate from an accredited school of professional nursing.
Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA).
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) upon hire or within one year of employment.
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) upon hire or within one year of employment.
One year of current acute care RN and/or Emergency Department experience. Will consider licensed military RN experience.
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Bachelor of science in nursing (BSN).
Must obtain BSN within three (3) years of hire

Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patient, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.
Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time.
Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
Requires working under stressful conditions and irregular hours.
Exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids.
Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
Personal Protective Equipment:
Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
