Mechanical Field Services Engineer/Specialist – Valves, Hydraulic Couplings, & GearboxesTSS Technical Services – Mechanical Systems, Mechanical AuxiliariesWORK LOCATION:It is highly desired for this position to be based in Birmingham, AL, however flexibility remains for location at one of the generating facilities within Southern Company. Relocation assistance is available for the successful candidate, if applicable. For any work location other than Birmingham, the candidate would be expected to travel to Birmingham and/or a field location on a routine (to be determined) and as-needed basis.JOB SUMMARYThis position will work with existing mechanical auxiliaries’ personnel in the SCS – TSS Technical Services - Mechanical Field Services group to support the maintenance, diagnostic & trouble shooting, and failure analysis activities with primary focus on valves, variable speed hydraulic couplings, and gearboxes. This position will also be involved with support activities for other miscellaneous mechanical equipment, including pumps, shaft couplings, mixers, etc. The Mechanical Auxiliaries Engineer/Specialist will participate in maintenance benchmarking efforts, coordinate off-site maintenance activities, monitor and assist with on-site maintenance activities, develop engineered improvements for equipment reliability issues, and work with system owners to optimize system parts inventories, system maintenance strategies, and share best practices.JOB QUALIFICATIONSEducation:

B.S. in Engineering is preferred but relevant work experience is acceptable.

Experience:

Power plant or other industrial plant experience is required

Experience working on valves in a heavy industrial plant environment is strongly preferred

Power or industrial plant operations/maintenance experience, or specific maintenance experience is strongly desired

Experience implementing maintenance strategies and inspections on mechanical power plant equipment is strongly desired

Equipment start-up experience is desired

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Must possess a basic mechanical aptitude and have a good understanding of power plant systems

A good working knowledge of various valves designs, valve actuator designs, and their applications, as well as a working knowledge of other mechanical equipment (i.e. variable speed hydraulic couplings, gearboxes, pumps) operation and maintenance is preferred

Excellent computer skills with effective written and verbal communication skills is a must

Ability to appropriately prioritize, plan and manage multiple projects is required

Ability to lead a group or team, conduct meetings and make technical presentations is required

The applicant must be able to work on platforms, utilizing appropriate safety equipment

The applicant must be able to work in confined spaces

Must be able to work in a dirty environment and be able to qualify for and wear a respirator

Applicant must be able to work independently with no supervision or as a member of a team with direction, as required

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

This job requires frequent travel across the Southern Company territory, as well as to various equipment repair shops across the country

Overnight stay, as well as unconventional work hours, is to be expected, particularly during fall and spring outage seasons

Overnight travel may be as high as 50%

Nature of work may require mobilization on very short notice­
