The Cornell University Uihlein Maple Research Forest is currently seeking a technician to aid and support in all aspects of maple production, research, and education at the research forest in Lake Placid, New York. Oversee maple and birch syrup production, including duties related to forest management, equipment installation and maintenance, data collection, evaporation, and canning. Work activities vary throughout the year creating a diverse and interesting work environment. Substantial manual labor is involved requiring physical fitness and awareness of safety issues and the ability to work under in all weather environments.

Required Qualifications:

Formal training beyond a HS Diploma of 6 months to 1 year; less than 6 months experience.

Ability to develop effective working relationships with a wide variety of constituents.

Ability to create an inclusive high quality and respectful work environment both in a team setting and independently to achieve departmental and university goals.

Must exercise sound and ethical judgment when acting on behalf of the University.

Must be physically capable of performing the functions associated with this position.

Requires physical fitness and must be able to lift heavy objects and move more than 50 pounds.

Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Driving background check will be required.

Flexibility to work long hours during the sugaring season (February-April) to accommodate sap flow.

Attention to detail and ability to perform quality work.

Trouble shooting and problem solving skills with aptitude to fix things.

Visual concentration, attention to detail and manual dexterity are required.

Ability to respond effectively in an environment in which priorities change.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous maple production and forest management experience or experience in food production or processing.

Bachelor’s degree in forestry, natural resources, food science, or chemistry related fields.

Mechanical maintenance experience.

Plumbing and or contracting experience.
