Chief Research Officer
POSITION SUMMARYThis position develops and implements strategies for all scientific research and operational services for Banner Health. This is a pivotal role, in that this leader will develop the strategy for scientific advancement at Banner Health in all dimensions of basic, translational, and clinical research, aligning with the overall goals of our organization. Provides leadership in key areas of creative direction and supervises appropriate clinical input, organizational reporting, and compliance with applicable standards for the conduct of research at Banner. Develops policies, practices, and systems to identify, implement and monitor new opportunities to advance the scientific research directed toward clinical areas of strategic emphasis and in alignment with Banner’s overall strategic clinical services and growth for the system and to provide research oversight to areas that promote clinical and performance excellence in graduate medical education, trauma, transplant, key clinical service lines and similar tertiary and quaternary areas. Directs the development of short- and long-range objectives, regulatory controls, policies, budgets, and operational plans for the organization. Oversees consistent interpretations, implementations, and achievement of strategic plans. Works collaboratively with academic partner(s) to optimize the synergistic value of care delivery and academic research. This position is also responsible for the scientific and clinical aspects and vision of the research, including Banner Alzheimer’s research.CORE FUNCTIONS1. Develops and implements the research strategy for Banner Health to deliver excellence and develop programs to enhance the reputation and recognition of Banner Research Institute within the system and nationally.2. Collaborates with academic partners to establish synergies between clinical care delivery and research opportunities. Provides appropriate oversight to partners on research endeavors that are collaborative and comprehensive to maintain scientific rigor and adherence to all ethical, regulatory, operations, financial and business requirements.3. Partners across Banner Health to optimize and harmonize enterprise-wide research administration and operations functions to lower administrative burden and improve timely outcomes for researchers, staff, and external sponsors.4. Drives an innovative, adaptable, and responsible service-oriented research administration and operations team that supports a complex, and rapidly evolving research and innovation enterprise.5. Evaluates and advises leadership on business and financial feasibility of strategic research and innovation initiatives, including major research program investments, facilities and instruments, service agreements, technology transfer and startup partnerships and alliances.6. Oversees the Executive Director of the Banner Alzheimer's Institute (BAI). Responsible for the scientific, clinical and organizational vision, design, development, and operation of BAI. Promotes the Institute’s reputation, brand, and image and continues to forge a leading model of statewide multi-institutional collaboration in biomedical research.7. Communicates research priorities,achievements,and impact to internal and external stakeholders,including leadership,clinicians,patients,and the public and advocate for increased funding and resources for research within the health system and broader scientific community.8. Provides strategic direction to staff through consistent demonstration and articulation of mission, vision, and values. Motivates staff through consistent message, goal setting and communication of intended results. Works with senior leadership to set direction of the organization and briefs directors on pertinent scientific research and operational matters.9. This position must exercise independent judgment in providing advice and counsel for all areas of Research (system wide) including research design, management, administration, and oversight.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSAn M.D / PhD., specialization in a field relevant to the goals of the Research.Six years of progressively responsible administrative leadership experience in science / research planning and / or process management. Appropriate financial (including grants) experience. Requires thorough understanding of research operations, with past leadership experience in operations, project management, budget management, planning, and executing regional projects. Must have a track record of scientific leadership and productivity Must have the ability to develop strong relationships with leaders from other research organizations, with state, NIH, suppliers and customers. Ability to effectively communicate with employees, the medical staff, and Healthcare, Hospital management staff.
