FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION OF UNIT:Reading Teachers play a crucial role in our District’s goal of increasing student achievement. The role involves a multifaceted approach including providing assessment and intervention services to students, collaboration and coteaching with classroom teachers, and community engagement. Reading Teachers possess a deep understanding of literacy development, expertise in implementing evidence-based reading interventions, individualized instruction, and the ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, parents, and the wider community. Reading Teachers play a pivotal role in assessing and diagnosing students' reading abilities, using this information to create tailored intervention plans for students. They are expected to implement one-on-one or small group instruction and provide targeted supports, employing research-based strategies to address the diverse learning needs within our student population, both during core Tier I instruction, as well as through intervention services.ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES include but not limited to:

Provide academic intervention services to students who need additional assistance in acquiring the skills necessary for reading success within a Multi-Tiered Systems of Support Framework.

Support students in acquiring reading skills that will enable them to be engaged in literacy and develop the necessary reading skills for success with the New York State Next Generation Learning Standards.

Support reading skill improvement through an approach grounded in the Science of Reading, including phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension strategies.

Observe and address the specific needs of a child by providing direct, push-in, and/or parallel supports with pull-out supports as needed.

Design, implement, and progress monitor interventions based on the analysis of ongoing formative and summative student assessment data.

Collaborate, co-plan, and co-teach with classroom teachers and necessary support staff to provide targeted and flexible reading instruction and interventions.

Communicate with classroom teachers and parents to convey student progress.

Initiate parent involvement and communicate with parents to recommend at-home reading activities for extended practice.

Plan, develop, and facilitate reading skill development based upon the demands of the New York State Next Generation Learning Standards.

Use data-driven instructional frameworks to provide intervention that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of student.

Administer and analyze a variety of assessment data to collaborate with school leadership, teachers and staff in an effort to plan for flexible groups that will improve reading skill outcomes for students.

Participate in professional development activities to support improved student outcomes.

Establish a professional, daily schedule as aligned with the school’s Master Schedule and operating times to provide direct supports to students during the instructional day.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND CERTIFICATION:

New York State Reading or Literacy Certification

Proven ability to work cooperatively and effectively with colleagues, including the ability to create and nurture a professional community of adult learners.

Demonstrated leadership qualities and strong interpersonal skills, including giving and receiving constructive feedback.

Strong pedagogical knowledge and content expertise.

Demonstrated expertise in oral and written communication.
