OverviewThe Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate (PCSD) researchers lead major R&D efforts in experimental and theoretical interfacial chemistry, chemical analysis, high energy physics, interfacial catalysis, multifunctional materials, and integrated high-performance and data-intensive computing.PCSD is PNNL’s primary steward for research supported by the Department of Energy’s Offices of Basic Energy Sciences, Advanced Scientific Computing Research, and Nuclear Physics, all within the Department of Energy's Office of Science.Additionally, Directorate staff perform research and development for private industry and other government agencies, such as the Department of Defense and NASA. The Directorate's researchers are members of interdisciplinary teams tackling challenges of national importance that cut across all missions of the Department of Energy.ResponsibilitiesThe Data Science and Machine Intelligence Group is seeking a highly motivated PhD Intern with a strong background in Natural Language Processing (NLP) to join our dynamic team. The internship will entail working closely with mentors on design, development and application of NLP methods to solve challenging domain problems. In particular, the intern will focus on training and utilizing large language models, including instrumentalizing LLM-based agents with various tools for scientific data analysis. Preferred skills will include familiarity and prior experience in data science, high performance computing, high level languages such as Python, and AI/ML libraries such as PyTorch and Tensorflow.Job Description:

Application and training/evaluation of large language models (LLMs)

LLM-based agents and agentic setup of LLMs

Natural language processing and prompt engineering

General data science, data curation and data processing

Applied mathematical principles to identify trends in data sets

QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:

Candidates must be currently enrolled/matriculated in a PhD program at an accredited college.

Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Relevant coursework covering a subset of the following areas: NLP, Machine Learning, Advance Linear algebra

Considerable experience in high level programming with familiarity to Python and experience with NLP libraries (e.g., Hugging Face, dockerization).

Experience working with LLM-based agents using frameworks like LlamaIndex, LangGraph, and LangChain

Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) and machine learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch).

Demonstratable experience in conducting scientific exploration and research through artifacts such as scientific publications and software tools.

Experience in handling unstructured and tabular data from PDFs, CSVs, or JSONs

Prior experience in developing asynchronous communication pipelines is a plus
