These are full-time probationary positions within the Academic Advising unit within Academic Affairs.Responsibilities:
Serve as academic advisor for an assigned caseload of students to assist with degree planning, navigating education requirements, educational persistence, and successful completion of their courses and/or degrees.
Provide a full range of advising activities to advisees in one-to-one meetings and small group counseling and consultation in-person and through phone, email, remote technologies, and other appropriate strategies.
Using advising models and culturally responsive strategies, support students in navigating program and university requirements and policies; degree planning and revision; graduation approval; and retention support services in the context of each student’s academic, civic, career, and personal development.
Maintain a broad knowledge of complex factors, campus resources, and community partners to support student success; such factors include university curriculum and requirements, transfer equivalencies and opportunities, creative learning strategies, pathways and requirements for advanced studies, financial aid programs, support services, community engagement and career offices.
Manage projects including planning, assessment, decision making authority and accountability for continuous improvement that enhances advising and student services.
Function as a member within and representing an advising team, while serving the needs of learners and contributing to practices that support student success, inclusion, equity, and critical thinking.
Minimum QualificationsThe following qualifications are required of all applicants seeking consideration for this position. Only applicants whose resumes clearly demonstrate fulfillment of each of these minimum qualifications will be considered for the position:
Master’s degree plus one year of professional experience advising, counseling, or student development in an educational setting; Or
Bachelor’s degree plus two years of professional experience in academic advising, counseling, or student development in an education setting.
Excellent and culturally responsive communication skills (oral, written interpersonal, intercultural, presentation).
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in student record and customer relationship management systems, including compliance with FERPA and similar regulations.
Demonstrated ability to learn, understand, and communicate complex information such as degree program requirements, pre-requisites, and graduation requirements sufficient to advise students in multiple degree programs.
Demonstrated competence and commitment to serve an ethnically and culturally diverse student body.
Experience providing academic advising or other student support services through telephone, email, social media, and video conferencing, or other innovative approaches to connecting with students.
Preferred Qualification
A record of professional development related to serving non-traditional and diverse students, including development on topics such as anti-racism and inclusion.
Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to apply a complex body of advising theories and practices, including approaches such as intrusive advising, developmental advising, and student success strategies.
Work experience with education in minority-serving institutions or similar contexts.
Experience with project management, program assessment, or regional accreditation sufficient to independently manage small-to-medium projects.
