Summary

As a Laser Operator at Wombat NYC, you will handle precision laser cutting and sheet metal fabrication using a variety of metals. This role involves reviewing technical drawings, programming cutting jobs, and ensuring production stays on schedule. You will collaborate closely with the team to meet production goals and maintain high-quality standards. You are expected to troubleshoot issues, communicate solutions effectively, and ensure that all projects are completed safely, on time and within budget.

Key Responsibilities

Programming and Operating:

● Receive and review technical drawings and cutting files, and report any questions or concerns to the production team.

● Program and operate laser cutting machinery, including task planning according to the production schedule.

● Load and unload material on the laser and CNC press brake.

● Master the operation of the laser cutter, CNC press brake and related equipment, including electrical and pneumatic tools.

● Gather and track all required tools, materials, and hardware for assigned projects.

● Ensure precise cutting of a wide range of materials such as hot rolled steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and brass.

● Proficiently modify cut files using Solidworks software and optimize for nesting and tooling.

● Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair laser machinery as needed.

● Provide high levels of craftsmanship, attention to detail, and resourcefulness in all tasks.

● Collaborate with the production team to ensure that best practices in fabrication are followed and quality standards are met.

● Forecast completion timelines and ensure the cutting process is fully documented and passed on to the next production step.

Department Operations:

● Prioritize safety and efficiency in all laser programming and operating practices.

● Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.

● Assist in daily production operations, including driving the forklift and tracking tasks, tools, and consumables for optimal department functionality.

● Operate with professionalism, punctuality, and reliability, setting an example for the team.

● Track progress on projects and ensure timely completion of all assigned tasks.

● Lead and contribute to post-project reviews to assess successes and areas for improvement, providing feedback to colleagues.

Systems and Safety:

● Communicate clearly and professionally with team members, supervisors, and other departments.

● Monitor inventory levels and submit requests for materials, tools, or consumables as needed.

● Regularly inspect and maintain workspaces, ensuring safety and cleanliness in all machining and assembly areas.

● Actively participate in improving workspace organization, tool storage, and layout for maximum safety and productivity.

● Assist in the introduction of new hires to department safety standards and protocols.

Preferred Education and Experience

● 1+ years of experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment.

● 1+ years of experience operating laser cutting machinery or CNC machines.

● Familiarity with Solidworks software for modifying cut files and optimizing production setups.

● Basic understanding of laser cutting parameters for various metals, including steel, aluminum, and brass.

● Experience with machine maintenance and troubleshooting.

Work Environment

This role operates within Wombat NYC’s fabrication studio, which is an active, noisy environment with exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and mechanical vibrations. Laser operators frequently work around moving machinery and must adhere to safety protocols at all times.

Physical Demands

The role requires physical strength and stamina, including standing, bending, lifting (up to 50 pounds), and operating machinery for extended periods.

This role requires regularly cleaning and maintaining the workshop to ensure optimal production conditions.
