Job Summary

The Senior Commercial Relationship Officer is responsible for developing and managing business relationships, originating and structuring commercial loans, and ensuring the overall growth and profitability of the credit union's commercial loan portfolio by fostering relationships with business members and promoting the credit union's business banking products and services. This role requires strong financial analysis skills, risk assessment expertise, and a proactive approach to business development and member relationship management. Primary responsibilities involve assessing loan applications, structuring financing solutions, ensuring compliance with lending policies, and driving the credit union’s commercial loan portfolio growth while maintaining strong credit quality.

Essential Functions

Loan Origination & Business Development:

Proactively identify, develop, and maintain relationships with business members and prospects to generate new commercial loan opportunities.

Promote and cross-sell the credit union’s full range of business banking products, including commercial real estate loans, equipment financing, lines of credit, business deposits, and treasury management services.

Proactively identify and develop new commercial lending opportunities to achieve loan production goals.

Build and maintain strong relationships with business owners, real estate investors, and industry professionals to generate loan referrals.

Analyze business financials, market conditions, and industry trends to identify financing solutions that align with member needs.

Loan Structuring & Underwriting Support:

Gather and analyze financial statements, tax returns, and other relevant documentation to assess creditworthiness.

Structure and negotiate loan terms, rates/pricing, repayment schedules, and covenants that align and balance risk tolerance, regulatory guidelines, and profitability.

Work closely with underwriters and credit analysts to ensure accurate loan assessments and timely decision-making.

Prepare and present loan recommendations to credit committees and senior management.

Portfolio Management & Member Relationship Retention:

Monitor and manage an assigned portfolio of commercial loans to ensure ongoing performance and compliance.

Conduct regular financial reviews with business members to assess their evolving needs and recommend additional services.

Identify potential risks or early warning signs of loan delinquency, working proactively with borrowers to mitigate issues.

Ensure timely loan renewals, modifications, and covenant compliance reviews.

Compliance & Risk Management:

Adhere to all credit union policies, regulatory requirements, and risk management guidelines.

Maintain up-to-date knowledge of lending laws, industry regulations, and best practices.

Ensure all loan documentation is accurate, complete, and compliant with internal and external policies and regulations.

Work closely with loan operations, credit analysts, underwriters, and compliance teams to ensure smooth loan closings and servicing.

Stay updated on commercial lending laws, industry trends, and best practices.

Market & Community Engagement:

Represent the credit union at business networking events, trade associations, and community functions to expand market presence.

Foster relationships with external referral sources, such as real estate brokers, accountants, and attorneys.

Stay informed about local economic trends and competitive market conditions to refine business development strategies.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

In-depth knowledge of financial analysis, underwriting principles, and risk assessment.

Strong relationship management and business development skills.

Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation abilities.

Ability to work independently and manage multiple loan transactions and deadlines simultaneously and effectively.

Proficiency in loan origination systems, financial software, and Microsoft Office Suite.

Strong attention to detail, and organizational, time management, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Knowledge of standard office practices and procedures, including the use of standard office equipment, arithmetic, and computer applications related to the work.

Knowledge of principles and practices of program and policy development and implementation.

Ability to work independently and in a team setting.

Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Ability to understand complex written and verbal communications and respond with professionalism and tact by phone, in person, and/or in written format.

Ability to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

5+ years of commercial lending experience.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in business, Finance, Economics, or a related field preferred.

Strong understanding of Commercial Real Estate and C&I loan structuring, Real Estate Valuation and Risk Assessment.

Strong understanding of Accounting, Interpretation of all types of financial statements of individuals and business entities and general familiarity with commercial documentation.

Strong understanding of depository services.

Additional Requirements

Incumbent must be bondable.

Physical Demands

This is a moderately sedentary office position although standing and walking between work areas is required. Individual(s) in this position must possess the mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer; visual acuity to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator at a reasonable speed, and to operate standard office equipment. This position occasionally bends, stoops, kneels, reaches, climbs, and walks; and pushes and pulls drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employee must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 10 pounds regularly, and up to 50 pounds occasionally. Works in an office environment with moderate noise levels.
