The Youth Support Specialist (YSS) works directly with court-placed youth, ages 12–20, residing in OCFS secure, limited-secure, and non-secure residential facilities. YSSs play a vital role in maintaining a physically secure and emotionally safe environment for youth and staff. They are integral members of a multidisciplinary team dedicated to supporting the rehabilitation, growth, and well-being of youth in care.

Key Responsibilities:

Establish and maintain professional, trusting, and respectful relationships with youth and staff from diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, religious, physical ability, Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Expression (SOGIE), and socio-economic backgrounds.

Supervise and monitor youth, including providing one-to-one supervision when required based on individual clinical needs.

Maintain facility security, including oversight of youth movement, key and door control, and overall safety procedures.

Promote conflict resolution, de-escalation, and restorative approaches to behavior management.

Actively participate as a member of each youth’s support team—a treatment-focused group of professional and para-professional staff addressing the youth’s emotional, behavioral, and developmental goals.

Model appropriate behavior, communication, and coping skills to foster a therapeutic environment.

Support the implementation of individualized treatment and behavior plans.

Contribute to a healthy, structured, and supportive facility culture that promotes accountability, self-respect, and positive decision-making.

Document and report incidents or behavioral concerns in accordance with facility policies.

Qualifications:

Candidates must meet one of the following criteria:

Two years of full-time direct care experience in the care and programming of youth ages 6–21; OR

A Bachelor’s degree; OR

An Associate’s degree and six months of experience; OR

A high school diploma or equivalency and one year of experience; OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Direct care experience includes working with youth involved in the juvenile justice system or in an institution, camp, school, community center, youth rehabilitation program, mental health or correctional institution, or residential center. Appropriate verifiable part-time experience will be accepted on a prorated basis.
