Homeschool teacher for charming 5 year old (+maybe sometimes baby bro)
Hi!
I'm a single father and I'm seeking homeschooling help for my daughter, age 5. My son is about 1.5 years old, and I’m hoping he may also be able participate as well pretty soon. But for now I can say it will be my daughter for sure. The kids are absolutely the sweetest, kindest, most fun kids you may ever meet, although I admit my judgment may be a little biased, of course!
For legal reasons, I need somebody who is credentialed to teach at grade 1 or 2 level – this is required by the state if I rely on a tutor to satisfy the schooling requirement. My daughter has been reading since she was 3, and I think she may actually be at a second-grade level now, but I guess we will see. It could be higher soon.
Ideally, most of the following will describe you:
- Credentialed for grade 1/2 (this is actually a firm requirement).
- Comfortable with kids who have tons of energy and creativity. These are extremely good kids, but they need a lot of attention!
- Ability to travel on occasion? If so, that would be great. But it’s not a showstopper if you can’t. (I don't have any travel plans currently, but I would like to have the option if possible, possibly even internationally.)
- Comfortable with a curriculum that is flexible and not totally, uh, conventional. I haven't purchased any curriculum or homeschool program yet, so the curriculum is currently open. I’d love to get the kids outdoors as much as possible as part of learning, maybe take some trips, offer creative activities, etc. My daughter is already interested in science and says she wants to be a scientist. So science subjects may get a lot of attention. You get the idea.
- Wish list (but not mandatory): able to teach in Spanish as well as English. Even better: some music skill or music teaching experience? That would be amazing.
- Able to pass a background check.
Scheduling is a bit flexible, but the state has a requirement of something like 175 days a year, with a minimum number of hours per day. Currently the 5-year-old is with her mom on weekends (Thursday night to Sunday night). So most likely, everything we do would have to be M to Th.
What about the pay? I need you to help me figure this out. I’m guessing this would be $30 per hour, or maybe more for an experienced teacher. I am vaguely aware of what public school teachers make, but this will be 1 or max 2 kids, and not full time. So I assume it would be less than a full-time schoolteacher will earn, but I also understand that this is not an area where I should try to save too much money. If you have ideas or requirements here, please let me know.
Last point: my kids and their education are VERY important to me, so you would have my total support in all ways. If you need materials or equipment or technology or access to programs or whatever, I would provide anything that you reasonably recommend.
Thanks for reading, and please reply here (email) with your resume or CV, license information, and any other thoughts you’d like to share. Or get in touch with any questions!
