Head Teacher, Afternoon Preschool Program with Health Stipend
The Oaks Parent-Child Workshop
Since 1947, The Oaks has been educating children and families in a cooperative morning preschool program setting accompanied by an afternoon program run by our staff. We are seeking a confident, caring, and creative Head Teacher to join our staff for The Oaks’ Afternoon Preschool Program. Current knowledge of child development tenets and familiarity with developmentally appropriate practice are essential requirements of the position. This position provides support and continuity of care for the Oaks children enrolled in the morning parent cooperative program.
General responsibilities:
○ Work collaboratively/co-teach with the Afternoon Teacher to ensure that the Afternoon Program provides a safe, nurturing, play-based, and inclusive learning environment.
○ Nurture the spirit and curiosity of each child while supporting independence and community.
○ Model positive behavioral strategies and conflict resolution practices.
○ Collaborate with staff to build child-centered, open-ended activities for the children.
○ Communicate confidently and appropriately with the Director, parents, and staff.
○ Keep the school environment attractive.
○ Maintain punctuality and regular attendance.
○ Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Afternoon Program.
○ Ensure the Afternoon Program reflects the philosophy, goals, and mission of the Oaks Parent-Child Cooperative
○ Work under the supervision of the Director and Parent Board.
○ Attend staff meetings and Parent Board meetings (as requested).
○ Able to attend other Oaks Parent-Cooperative events throughout the year.

Hiring Qualifications/Requirements:
o Possess or qualify to obtain a Child Development Program Site Supervisor Permit or Director Permit or,
o Bachelor of Arts degree in one of the following with equivalent combination of education and experience: Child Development Early Childhood; Education Psychology with specialization in Child Development; Elementary Education Psychology with specialization in Child Development; or Family Life Studies.
o Two years or more of teaching experience in an early childhood program. Note: Equivalent experience as a parent in a cooperative preschool setting may be considered.
o Satisfy Community Care Licensing requirements prior to employment - TB test clearance,
Current Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR Certificate and a Criminal Background Clearance.
Bonus experience:
o A demonstrated commitment to nature-based learning
o Fluency in Spanish
o Experience in participating in a parent-cooperative preschool environment
Benefits: $25-$28 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications. Includes a health insurance stipend of $250 per month.
Duration: One year (renewed on a yearly basis).
Calendar Year Work Schedule: The Oaks is on a 10-month school calendar of 37 weeks and an eight (8) week Summer Camp Program. This position requires a commitment of 45 weeks per year.
Working Hours: 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. during the Santa Barbara City College calendar year (August 22, 2022 - May 30, 2023). The Summer Camp Program work hours are 8:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

The Oaks Parent-Child Workshop is a cooperative preschool, providing parent education in an inclusive and nurturing community, and a play-based learning environment for children 2 ½ to 5 years of age. We are a parent education program affiliated with Santa Barbara City College.
Our Morning Program is run by a Director and Assistant Director. Parents participate in a weekly class, share in the operation of the school, and are actively involved in their child’s learning. Our Afternoon Program runs in complement to our Morning Program to provide seamless, full-day care for families in our warm and nurturing environment. The Afternoon Preschool Program supports a smaller group of children (up to twelve children who are developmentally ready for a higher level of independence), accompanied by a Head Teacher and Teacher.
